10 of the Best New Plugins for WPMU in 2010

I’ve put together a summary of some useful plugins that you may not have heard about yet. Some of them are new in 2010 and others have been around a little while and have been recently updated. With all the buzz about BuddyPress lately, I’d like to make sure we’re keeping you up to date on all the new and exciting ways to extend WPMU.

1. ThreeWP Global Message

1This new plugin will allow you to display different messages in the admin panel based on the user’s role. Custom messages, or no message at all, can be displayed for administrators, editors, authors, contributors and subscribers.

2. WPMU Simple Dashboard

2Administrators can use this plugin to turn on or off the following widgets in the dashboard for their users: Primary Feed, Secondary Feed, Incoming Links, Recent Comments, Recent Drafts, Plugins, Quick Press, and Right Now.

3. Embed RSS

3This will add a little button to the visual and html editors within WordPress to allow the user to enter an RSS feed url, choose the number of items to display, and choose to display content, author or date for each item.

4. WPMU Contextual Related Posts

This plugin requires an Open Calais API key and a Yahoo Term Extraction API key. It works to create relationships between WPMU blog posts based on user defined tags, relevant Open Calais tags and extracted terms.

5. WPMU Block Spam by Math

5This is a great new plugin that works with the WPMU signup process to block spam by requiring a simple math question to be answered at registration.

7. BuddyPress Profile Widget for Blogs

This is a brand new plugin that enables blog admins to be able to show their BuddyPress profile on their WPMU blogS.

8. WP Activity

8This plugin creates an activity stream in the front and/or backend of a WordPress blog, based on the activities of registered users, such as connections, new comments, profiles updates, new posts, etc. You can also follow the streams via RSS.

9. Admin Menu Editor

This new plugin allows for manual editing of the dashboard menu via drag and drop as well as the creation of custom menus.

10. User Info Login Shortcode

10D’arcy Norman created this plugin to easily display a login form on the front page of a WPMU network if the user is not logged in. If he is logged in, it displays a logout link and a few user-related menu items.
