What makes a good WPMU theme?

Well, in my book, it’s all about simplicity… users need to be able top configure as many aspects of the theme as possible - without the need for a single code edit or extra plugin.
And of course they need to be safe – so any theme that allows users to insert PHP via the options menu is out, pronto!
And that’s what I’ve been looking for when scoping out another batch of themes for the next pack.
Sure, we’ll be customizing these further ourselves – making sure widgets are in place, adding in custom headers, threaded comments and all that jazz, but I thought you might be interested in a selection of the themes we’ve chosen so far:
This is possibly the best photoblog themes that I’ve ever tried out – because it’s so darn simple. It just selects an image from your latest posts and displays it beautifully!

At first glance this looks like it’s going to be a pain in the arse and never work out of the box… but it does, and brilliantly too!
What can I say, I’m a sucker for simple, yet beautiful themes.
Another highly complex, powerful and yet ‘just works’ theme – nice that it comes with its own custom header function too which saves us adding it in like we usualy have to :)
… so who said free themes were dead?
