Excellent Free WordPress MU Themes

What makes a good WPMU theme?

Well, in my book, it’s all about simplicity… users need to be able top configure as many aspects of the theme as possible - without the need for a single code edit or extra plugin.

And of course they need to be safe – so any theme that allows users to insert PHP via the options menu is out, pronto!

And that’s what I’ve been looking for when scoping out another batch of themes for the next pack.

Sure, we’ll be customizing these further ourselves – making sure widgets are in place, adding in custom headers, threaded comments and all that jazz, but I thought you might be interested in a selection of the themes we’ve chosen so far:

Autofocus

autofocus

This is possibly the best photoblog themes that I’ve ever tried out – because it’s so darn simple. It just selects an image from your latest posts and displays it beautifully!

Cellar heat Dark

darjkone

At first glance this looks like it’s going to be a pain in the arse and never work out of the box… but it does, and brilliantly too!

Cellar heat can be found here.

Doc

What can I say, I’m a sucker for simple, yet beautiful themes.

Emptiness 1.2

emptiness

Another highly complex, powerful and yet ‘just works’ theme – nice that it comes with its own custom header function too which saves us adding it in like we usualy have to :)

… so who said free themes were dead?

  1. I like most new WP-themes, but some are amazingly ugly… The one with the cat is sweet, but would one really wanna’ have it for good? I think that the best theme is something elegant but subtle. After all, the text should do the talking, not the design. :)

  2. any paid WP themes, that support WPMU and its great for displaying
