Free WordPress Drag and Drop Themes to Make Life a Little Easier

There are many more non-coders out there using WordPress than coders. For us non-coders, we often think, “Why isn’t arranging elements in my theme easier? Why can’t I just drag stuff and drop it where I want?”

Well, with a number of the more sophisticated premium themes these days you can. But there are also a few free themes out there that let you do the same thing.

While a number of these themes try hard to upsell you to their premium version, as always, there’s no harm in giving the free versions a spin first. They may offer all you need. And, in fact, a few below offer quite a lot – drag and drop functionality plus a lot more.

iFeature – DEMO | DOWNLOAD

iFeature is a responsive theme from Cyber Chimps. Here’s the default look.

The drag and drop section in the blog area lets you control five major elements. And below the drag and drop area, I’ve included the beginning of the next section to show how you can choose the page to be full-width or with a sidebar, as well as control some other options. (There’s another drag and drop area for the header.)

While the drag and drop area is limited to the five elements pictured above (and the header), there are a lot of areas that you can control either by flicking an on/off switch, or pulling down a menu and choosing a selection (like with fonts). Here’s a look at how you can easily control the template for a single post page.

Eclipse – DEMO | DOWNLOAD

The Eclipse theme is another responsive theme from Cyber Chimps. Here’s a look at the default front page.

Again, the drag and drop area lets you control five major elements. And below the drag and drop area, I’ve included the beginning of the next section to show how you can choose for the page to be full-width or with a sidebar.

As with the iFeature theme, you can control lots more than with just the drag and drop sections. The templates, for example, work the same way as shown in the iFeature section.

iRibbon – DEMO | DOWNLOAD

iRibbon is a graphically strong responsive theme from Cyber Chimps. Here’s the default homepage.

As with other Cyber Chimps themes, the drag and drop section only tells part of the story. Here’s a look at the drag and drop area for the blog section, and below it gives a hint of other easy-to-change options: full-width page, left sidebar, or right sidebar.

Here’s a look at one of the template control areas. While not drag and drop, it offers a number of convenient options.

Neuro – DEMO | DOWNLOAD

Neuro is yet another responsive Cyber Chimps theme. Here’s a look at the home page.

As this is another Cyber Chimps theme, its drag and drop section looks much like one of their common set ups. Here’s a glace below.

Response – DEMO | DOWNLOAD

Another Cyber Chimps responsive theme. (I know that must be getting old, but they are one of the few shops out there putting out a number of different free drag and drop themes. … Smart, if you ask me.)The set up, of course, is much like previous examples.

Pagelines – DEMO | DOWNLOAD

Pagelines is a responsive theme with drag and drop features. Here’s a look at the default home page.

Below is a look at the drag and drop section.

In addition, there is special support for certain plugins.

Platform – DEMO | DOWNLOAD

Platform is brought to you by the same people who do the Pagelines theme. While this rather plain looking demo page may not inspire excitement, the extensive drag and drop features might.

Here’s  a look at the drag and drop section. A pull down menu at the top (expanded on the left side of the screen shot) give you drag and drop options on a multitude of pages. There are also many other options that can be easily controlled from the backend.

Snapshot – DEMO | DOWNLOAD

Although billed as a theme for showcasing photography, its drag and drop features let you use it to build all types of sites. As the demo page isn’t very well maintained on wordpress.org, here’s a look at a quick homespun demo.

And here’s a look at the drag and drop section. Some of the most powerful features reside in the upper left-hand corner. The three icons you see there let you easily add widgets, columns, or pre-built layouts.

PressWork – DEMO | DOWNLOAD

And finally, we’ll go ahead and mention PressWork, but we don’t know exactly where it stands at this point. We’ve written about PressWork before. It’s a very interesting (watch the video on that other post) free drag and drop framework.

That said, there were many reports that it had closed its doors. Some old blog posts point to the front page of PressWork.me as if there had been some type of notice posted there. But when you go to the site now, there’s nothing that indicates the project is dead.

Sending an email via their contact form doesn’t seem to work (at least it didn’t seem to when I tried). Is that a sign of its lifelessness or just a buggy contact form? Who knows? In any case, we’ll try to find out more and let you know.

In the meantime, here’s a look at a default home page.

Do you know of any other good FREE drag and drop themes we might have missed? If so, mention them in the comments.

  1. Cool list of themes, definitely interested in checking out the Cyber Chimps offerings for low budget website projects. Pagelines doesn’t play nice with IE, and the developers didn’t seem willing to address those issues, at least at the time. Cross browser compatibility is crucial with any theme, and I’m hoping the other themes deliver.

  2. All of the Cyber Chimps themes are “average” good, and its not that much “Drag n Drop” as you think before you use them.
All of them suffer from “limited” drag n drop settings and boundaries.
Is there any Drag n Drop “Page” builder? For easily design new templates for pages in your WordPress?
So far i havent found anyone.
    Any suggestions?

  3. Joe, Thank you. Good list of themes, just want to add PrimePress. It is also a free responsive WordPress theme with drag and drop functionality. I’m sure that it will came in handy.
