I'd reckon wp.com has more than 50000 users, so the answer is yes. If the servers can handle it depends on the setup (take a look a the multi-db plugin here, btw).

If you need BuddyPress depends totally on your what you want. I haven't worked with it myself, yet, but from what I understand BuddyPress 'takes over' your WPMU install (I guess that would also depend on what plugins of BP you decide to install). There are a few plugins released here (friends, communities and messaging, I believe they're called) that can help you with some parts of the interactivity without installing BuddyPress.

Hello all,

I have just started learning WP MU. I think its wonderful. I have worked with WP before and I loved it. I hope WP MU provides a great working experience too.

I am developing a site using WP MU. I wanted to know if WP MU can handle loads of up to 50000+ users. We also plan on using plugins extensively. Would that affect the site's performance in any way?

Also needed to know, whether Buddypress is an extension of WP MU or its just something that is completely different? Since I am developing an interactive site, would I need this API as well? Does it integrate easily with WP MU?

Lots of questions there, but I have been reading the forums, people seem really helpful !!

Thanks in advance,
Sib

Oh, but that's easy. That's built-in WPMU stuff :) Just take a look at the WPMU Functions in the WP Codex (don't overlook the get_sitestats function).

I've down a quick search and haven't found what I'm looking for, so I thought I'd suggest it here.

My suggestion is a plugin that generates sitewide blog stats (not as in FireStats) that will be viewable on the site itself. In particular I want to display the total number of blogs, but you might also include total number users.

We use Arne's sitemap plugin on our installs but removed all of the options and hardcoded them into the code.

As to verification, google for 'wordpress sitemap verification' and you can find it on some apache info site with a weird name.

hi there.
- installed and integrated bbpress with my wpmu installation
- installed the bbpress edublogs theme, will need to further customize it.
- my integration worked perfect, except for one thing: bbpress sees all my registered users, but claims they have no role. I'd realy hate to have to manually edit all users and give them memebr privileges. I googled around and all I found was this advice to isnert these lines:

$bb->custom_user_table = 'wp_users';
$bb->custom_user_meta_table = 'wp_usermeta';

into bb-config.php - can anyone confirm? has anyone got an idea what could have gone wrong?

- what plugins are you guys using with your bbpress isntallations? I wouldn't want to go through all of them and test which ones are working, so just share which ones work for you
- what are you using for spam protection? or is it enough to only allow loggd in users to post?

Anyone able and up to fixing that plugin?

Sounds like a brilliant plugin to me.

I'd even donate a small amount, maybe we can make this a communual effort? Anyone else interested? I know I should probably post this in the job section, btu wanted to get some feedback first.

Gotcha, thought there might be some reason why it was simplified. I also had no idea there was such a thing as a sitemap validator, very cool. I think I'm going to focus on adding the sitewide tags / rss, I'm not overly concerned about sitemap tags and cats.....

Interesting. That Validome.org check shows it as valid, however when I submit it to my Google Webmaster account, it isn't showing up, with them saying it generated a 404.

When I look at the sitemap in IE 6 (gak!) I get the following at the very bottom of the sitemap.xml page:

<!-- Sitemap was loaded from a cached file
 -->
- <!-- Page not cached by WP Super Cache. No closing HTML tag. Check your theme.
 -->

Safe to assume that this is not the theme, but the sitemap plugin that generates this coded page?

Update: Guess it was just a Google being slow thing. Just refreshed that page on my webmaster account and all seems well in that world. Thanks again!

Please accept my apologies.

I realize you folks are busy, and the last thing I would want to do as a paying customer is add to that burden. What I would try to do is help guide myself and others that might be having challenges with any of the Premium WordPress Dev plugins that connect to PayPal and are no longer functioning properly.

Many folks, myself included will do searches on the forums database starting narrow and expanding out from there. From that research I came across this particular thread. While I do not believe there was anything in this thread that connected the issues, clearly, your gracious reply to that other thread makes this connection.

If I had been searching for this challenge, and came across this post, I would have been taken there and confirmed there was a connection. And while, I'm sure you'll have this fixed up likety split, next week as you indicated, at some point, someone might find this thread, and realize all is going to be well in the world.

That's the only reason for posting here. Not to abuse the system, or take up anyone's time unnecessarily. I do apologize, most sincerely if this action was inappropriate, as my intention was definitely to be helpful, not a needy customer!

Thanks,

Hiya,

We ran into a lot of problems when using the other (larger) sitemap plugins on large WPMU installs. Some of the ones that include all posts from a blog in the sitemap required way too much RAM. This is why we created the simple sitemaps plugin.

I'm afraid there currently aren't any plans to add features so if you need all of the bells and whistles (or even some of them) then it's best to use one of the other plugins.

Hiya,

It seems the recent comments plugin lists comments by last modified date. Can it be changed so that they are listed by the date they were published?

Try switching the query to ORDER BY comment_date_gmt

Thanks,

Hello,
I'm trying to make a template using the homepage template as mentioned above in the Triden theme (same as Nelo). I've put the template info at the top and saved as page-blog.php as per WP Codex manual. It works great without any edits and my "My Blog" page looks like the "custom homepage". When I edit out the reference to the custom homepage, I get only one post and the widget areas are without css. Here's what I did, any suggestions?

<?php
/*
Template Name: Page Blog
*/
?>

<?php get_header(); ?>

<!-- <?php include (TEMPLATEPATH . '/options.php'); ?>

<?php if(($tn_wpmu_layout_mode == "") || ($tn_wpmu_layout_mode == "custom homepage")) { ?>

<?php include (TEMPLATEPATH . '/custom-homepage.php'); ?>

<?php } else if($tn_wpmu_layout_mode == "blog homepage") { ?> -->

<div id="post-entry">

<?php if (have_posts()) : ?>

<?php include (TEMPLATEPATH . '/headline.php'); ?>

<?php while (have_posts()) : the_post(); ?>

etc. etc. ......

No other changes except for the edit out of the options.php.
Thanks!

I assume I need to change the ORDER BY variable, but it is currently set to ORDER BY site_comment_id which is confusing as I'd assume it would have been set to last modified?

That was it. For some reason in wp-config.php:

define('COOKIE_DOMAIN', '');

was empty

changed it to

define('COOKIE_DOMAIN', 'mydomain.com');

works fine now.

Hi, I mean Hiya!

The simple sitemaps plugin is great, but simple. Would be awesome to have a sitemaps plugin that adds the more common sitemap plugin functionality of having control over also adding tags, categories, pages, etc. to the sitemap. Control over priority would also be awesome instead of the current descending priority based on age. I guess I'm pretty spoiled with the xml sitemap generator plugin we use on standard non mu installs.... :)

Hi!

I noticed that the analytics plugin also counts dashboard / admin page views as well. I had never seen an analytics plugin do this before so I was surprised to see these pages showing up in my reports! Might be nice to have an option to not count admin pages as it might be possible that most users are not interested in having dashboard page views included with their normal analytics reports... just a thought.

They want you to implement that code I pasted on the page where the forum that you want to be "it" is at. It will not do the actual tracking but it'll show a window with info that google is keeping track of visitors on the page, and according to google it'll "help tracking".

The code you actually use to track with is inserted in the form. So i.e. when someone fills out all the options and submit the forum, google gets an indication that the user has submitted the form.

It's explained better here:
