A few questions from a beginner

Monthly

Hi,

1.Can Wordpress, Multisite and Buddypress can all be used together or should you stick to wordpress and multisite, or wordpress and buddypress only?

2. To have plugins work accross a network do we still install them in the /plugins folder or in the /mu-plugins?

3. Are there any plugins which have or cause a large overhead on the server? I have a dedicated server but after installing all the various components that i would like on my site. Site speed is very slow indeed.

Thank you for the advice in advance!

All can be used together just fine, in fact with all of them you can offer your users blogs.

2. To have plugins work accross a network do we still install them in the /plugins folder or in the /mu-plugins?

Depends on the plugin - see also my answer to your other post about this.

A lot of them do - make sure you have some sort of caching on your server (if it's dedicated, look at putting memcached on there) and an opcode cache such as XCache or eAccelerator

hey there

1) you can have a single wordpress install with buddypress, or a multisite install with buddypress. The only difference with multisite and buddypress is that user can have the option to create there own blogs if they wish to. With multisite and buddypress your main domain shall be the one with buddypress features, i.e members, groups etc while the subdomains will be the normal blogs.

2) Most plugins (unless specific instructions), you can simply put them in the /plugins folder, and network activate those plugins, in the wordpress network admin.

3) i am not sure about the the load on the server, but i have around 30 plugins active in a shared hosting account, and it doesn't seem to cause an issue

edit: i was typing at the same type barry was lol

Hehe awesome thanks guys,

Yes i am basically trying to give users thier own blogs/websites but make them feature rich so im guessing the 70 or so plugins isnt a good idea!

It depends on your hosting resources. We use dozens of plugins, but we run on dedicated servers. I see that you're on dedicated too, so it might depend on your specs. For example, we're running 2x quad-core Xeon, 24 GB RAM, etc. However, we've run similar configurations on quad-core Xeon with 8 GB RAM.

If you don't mind sharing your specs and configuration (including which plugins), I can try to help identify where the issue might be. Are you running any opcode cache and/or WordPress cache? We run eAccelerator and Quick Cache.

Another (possibly) helpful tip is that we also run LiteSpeed. It seems to perform significantly better than Apache in PHP applications, although some might have their own opinions. It's not free, but can be worth it depending on your needs. There are free and/or lower-priced options available such as NGINX and/or Varnish, but those have more complex configuration IMHO.

Hope this helps.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for the advice, here is the plan of action i have taken:

1. Memcache & E-Accelerator - installed by hosting company (this was completed today)
2. wp-super-cache installed - by myself on the install today
3. Deactivated all plugins
4. I will work my way through the plugs i feel would be essential and slowly activate things one by one to try to strike up a functionality / speed balance.

5. I do not have multi-db installed which is something i will try to do also but it seems a bit of a pain to do.
