Excellent idea here. Any other +1s for something like this? I think this is on our roadmap, but perhaps could get bumped up if enough folks are interested in getting it.
there is bp album+ and supposedly they are coming out with a big update this month or next that will include other types of uploads possible besides just images... but the more options the better i say.
Really? Are there problems with allowing Youtube and Vimeo embeds? I thought it would take away risks with them being hosted elsewhere.
There is an update to Bp Album called Bp media but it's a MASSIVE project and way to complex for a lot of sites needs.
I want the simplest, most straight forward and user friendly gallery that you can make. User friendly above crazy amounts of functionality.
Just a simple plugin that would allow uploads of video, audio and photos but done in a really easy to use interface for members.
Me too I'd love to see this added to the WPMUDEV's arsenal of plugins and I second what Ross mentioned: "I want the simplest, most straight forward and user friendly gallery that you can make. User friendly above crazy amounts of functionality"...
I am using currently Brajesh's BP Gallery Plug-IN on my 2 Buddypress sites and I have to say it's pretty user unfriendly, doesn't mingle seemingless into the existing design plus is a little buggy and updating it is a serious pain in the a**...
Actually what really #!!$**!!! with the WordPress gallery is this #!!$**!!! system of attach/detach pictures. I'm new to WP and have never seen something so insane before! It should be simply possible to select the desired images from the library and generate a gallery in any page/post. (Sorry for the flood... it's just to justify my +10 above :-/)
@Lorange, you can only vote up to your rep count so use them wisely! ;D
I agree the WordPress media bits are in need of some massive overhauls. It's been talked about in dev discussions for quite awhile and keeps getting pushed back. We know folks want this though. It's just a matter of getting the time to work it out!
I'd like WPMU DEV to offer a good gallery plugin, NextGen is decent and there are some other goodies but we need a professionally supported and extremely simple to use one too.
+1 for me too. I just spent a little bit of time today looking at Gallery plugins and finally settled for one which was reviewed on wpmu.org, Tinymce Thumbnail Gallery Plugin, thanks Sarah! Ease of use seems to be a big stumbling block to most of the plugins out there.
@masonjames: I didn't know that the reputation points were useful, just thought they counted up our number of posts! :)
yes, would like to see this as well - phpfox and boonex dolphin have great options and end user friendliness in these areas, love to see WP get more friendly.. (*wonders if the easy blogging plugin works with wordoress-non multiesite yet - hehe - more forums to check)
We're tentatively looking at a gallery plugin this year that will work with both WP and BP, although to be honest it's not high on the list (poor response / few requests in the survey) - I'll publish what our plans are for WPMU DEV on wpmu.org and link to them in the forums here soon to give you a better idea.
@James: My theory is that Buddypress admins have no time for surveys, they need to constantly monitor their sites and keep their community happy because the free plug-ins available by hobby developers give them a lot of headaches, help us WPMUD Dev and we shall fill out your surveys in return :) LOL
I want this so bad it hurts. I'd renew my WPMUDEV membership for a whole year (instead of one month!) if I had something that would let users upload multiple photos to their profile and sort them (and tie it into the voting plugin so people could upvote/downvote photos!) Can I get an Amen??? :)
I'm also looking for something like this. Has anyone found something that works? I installed the BP Album plugin, but I'm having trouble uploading more than one photo and there is nowhere to embed videos.
DEFINITELY +1 for a photo gallery plugin. I'm totally fine with YouTube video gallery security risk (if any) so a video gallery also gets a +1 from me. Thanks.

I'd +1 this too. I'm considering joining BuddyDev right now because they have a Gallery plugin which supposedly works great, but I don't wanna have to pay 2 memberships...

Ooh (says he, mouth drooling). If we're considering developing a gallery plugin, here are my suggestions:
1. It should function with or without Buddypress, on both single and network installs. If BP is active, galleries should be created in user profiles. If on a standalone WP install, a User Gallery page could be made available to each user, with a directory of all user galleries.
2. As touched upon by Andrew above, I think it's important that users be able to use the media items they've uploaded to the main site on their own sites in a network setup. Either via an "Add Gallery Item" icon in their backend post-editor screen, or by copy-pasting a shortcode that could be auto-generated for each uploaded item (could be very handy for those who use front-end post forms on their main site).
3. Comments and sharing with social networks are self-evident... but I'll list them just in case ;-)
4. It should play nice with other WPMUdev plugins... ProSites, Membership, etc.
If anyone can think of more suggestions, please add them to this thread. Let's keep the devs motivated on this one folks!
Buddypress and wordpress are fast becoming the number 1 choice for social networks and competing well with things such as social engine etc.
However there are 2 things i believe are the missing pieces of the puzzle.
1 is the photo gallery function
2 is the number of premium buddypress themes out there. Most actually look terrible and at present you need to make your own if you want an amazing looking site or customize a none buddypress theme which is usually very buggy in my opinion and not for beginners.

Wouldn;t mind it but a big -1 for the embeding videos. Big security risk there.

Also I'd like to see the Pretty Gallery add-on that Brajesh offers already included in the plugin: http://buddydev.com/plugins/pretty-gallery/
I am using currently Brajesh's BP Gallery Plug-IN on my 2 Buddypress sites and I have to say it's pretty user unfriendly, doesn't mingle seemingless into the existing design plus is a little buggy and updating it is a serious pain in the a**...

+1 for the gallery plugin here! And I don't think video embeds from someone like Youtube represent too huge a security risk.....:-)
Thx.

Hi,
BuddyDev seems to be a good option getting for a BP Gallery plugin, but I also do not want to join another group or add complexity by using plugin not supported by WPMUDEV..
Is anyone using this BuddyDev Gallery plugin?

I've been a member off and on at BuddyDev and can definitely vouch for the quality (and quantity!) of plugins that Brajesh Singh creates and supports.
Bp-Gallery alone is worth spending the $30 for 3 months access. I've used it on a few sites and love it!

+1 for gallery plug-ins that work with posts, pages, and have lots of appearance options :)

We're seeing more interest around this and considering it for 2012. Stay tuned.
