I have been recently informed that Google Maps may charge for usage.
Is the current WPMUDEV google maps plugin capable of using a different mapping system? Or is future planning being considered in the event that Google slaps heavy fees on mapping users?

I'm not sure what kind of traffic you have coming through your site, but if you are hitting the caps I don't think you'll have a problem paying the fees. At that point your probably putting more money into hardware
Google Maps API will still be free for the first 25,000 views per day (those using the Google Maps styling features will be limited to 2,500 views a day)
The bad news is that once your app or website exceeds those limits you’ll be forking out $4 for every 1,000 people that hit your site (or view a map in your mobile app). Alternately, developers can cough up $10,000+ for a Google Maps API Premier licence, which, in addition to the unlimited access offers more advanced geocoding tools, tech support, and control over any advertising shown.

That's really only for Enterprise use though - millions of calls every day kind of level so unless you're running Amazon I wouldn't worry about it!
