Any possibility that the developer community here can get involved in finishing this project? http://buddypress.com/

Hi There,
The team that runs this website also runs Incsub and Edublogs. So unfortunately we don't have that much free time to work on other projects. In fact we're booked solid for the next two months.
Thanks,
Andrew

I think there is a great opportunity gone missing here. The buddypress project has as its primary goal the transformation of wordpress MU from a multi user blogging platform to a blogging and social networking platform whereby bloggers within a network/domain can create a strong community.

I can agree with that, but there's only so many hours in the day. :)
You did see someone put it up on google code?

Not nearly enough hours in the day.
Thanks,
Andrew

I hope someone picks it up and runs with it - it looks like a hot little package!

May want to bring that up on the mu forums.

Already been brought up there. Seems like everyone wants it done, but anyone who would know what to do with it is monstrously busy.

Looks like buddypress is going to include avatars and friends. I know this is a bit early (let's be honest, very early) but does Andrew have any plans on creating a importer in either direction?

Would someone please kindly bring up on the dev mailing list the question of where these plugins are going to be supported? There's no forum on the buddypress site. Does this mean they're going to support it on the mu site?
I would suggest leaving my name out of it.

I'll be taking advantage of the new avatar hooks to replace the default avatar system (gravatar) with ours.
Thanks,
Andrew

They're still saying it's not officially released yet, so I would assume it's all on the mailing list and trac for now. there's still a ton of work to be done.

...which is real strange if you ask me as they had a working install of this stuff when they first started.
I guess they started all over from the beginning.

Can someone say "second system effect"?
If you look at the promoted features on the new official buddyPress.com site, it looks like they've signed up for a TON of new features that didn't exist in the version that was up on google code.
I will admit to not be a Drupal expert, but it looks to me like they've bitten off a lot of work, so much so that it would make sense to start over. It's not like there was all that much working in the original stuff.
Anyway, I wish them luck... obviously more people working in the space just means more ideas on how to do something well.

I have to admit that I'm concerned about the "endusers only get a single blog" bit that's being presented on the mail list currently. That'll shut out all of our installs.

That pretty much shuts out all of ours as well. From what I can tell BuddyPress just isn't going to be too friendly with existing installs.
That's a bit crazy IMO because that shuts out all of the larger sites.
Thanks,
Andrew

Especially wp.com. I wonder if they've made the connection or if they're just not seeing it.
I tried to raise the issue on the mail list a few hours ago but I note that my email didn't show up. Hmmm....
edit: it just hit the archives. Still haven't gotten a copy of it back but at least it got there.

I haven't been watching the email list, maybe I should... but I have so much on my plate...
That being said, I do think there are good reasons to limit the number of blogs a person is part of... for some sites. I never thought the UI for creating multiple blogs made sense on wp.com or wpmu...
If you're a power user, it makes sense, but if you're a normal person, one blog can be confusing enough already.

"Especially wp.com. I wonder if they've made the connection or if they're just not seeing it."
Could be that. Or could be they don't plan on using it on wp.com, OR using a modified version "just for them".

Look like they recognize the issue now.
I was going to say "Got a clue" but that's too mean. Looks like Andy is willing to listen to others using the system.
Hmm, I wonder how long that will last or if Matt will beat it out of him any time soon.

I have a feeling Matt will be talking to him soon. I have a strong reason to believe a few of the features will be making their way to wp.com so it will have to support existing installs to a degree.
Thanks,
Andrew
