Hi,
I have noticed that Buddypress in the profile page shows the username for the Full name in the users profile in the members section.
Can someone explain what the purpose of the full name is as I have looked around and can't see where it is used? I understand that a user can update the first and last name in their wp admin profile and select to use that instead of their username in their activity stream.
I'm confused about where the Full name fits in the scheme of things.

I have realized that the full name seems to be replaced by the username. I don't even see why the full name field is needed as there does not seem to be any way to access it for editing. Very confusing, I'll have to research this one and see what buddypress has to say.
It doesn't take the username as such, it takes what ever the users choses as their "Display Name Publicly As" from their profile. They can choose the username, first name, second name, full name, etc.
For BuddyPress extended profiles you can edit that on the following:
I have just realized there must be a problem with my install of buddypress or another plugin causing an issue. I should be getting my name showing in full name field but I get my wordpress username instead.
I have had a look at the db fields and it seems that the wp username you use in the registration form is being inserted into the wp_bp_xprofile_data tables for field id 1. The wp username is inserted into wp_users user_nicename field.
I'm going to do a fresh install on my localhost an see what happens. I think I'll deactivate all my plugins and see what happens before I do this.
normally to deactivate all my plugins I simply rename the plugins directory to something else like pluginsold - create a new plugins directory - add the plugin I want to test.
However, CAUTION - this does not deactivate my MU-Plugins folder in which I choose to keep my multi domains and domain mapping plugins inside of nor the Database files for my multi db is outside of this folder there is no effect on doing this.
I reverse the process when I have completed testing.
I delete the test plugins folder then rename the original back to plugins.
Hope this helps and eager to hear about your results sir :-)

Hey webezy.
Which field are you referring to? Perhaps a screenshot.
I've included a screenshot of my profile page on my sandbox site, but both fields there are what I defined in BuddyPress through the admin area.
Perhaps I misunderstand what you are referring to?

Hi Timothy,
I have provided some screenshots to explain.
Thx

Yeah I see what you mean now. :-)
The default WordPress name field will take you display name. So if in your profile you choose your full name then it will show that.
/wp-admin/profile.php

Just to add.... You can change that field title to Display Name. Then create some new fields for extra data if you wished, :-)
Take care.

It can be named as you like. :-)
It doesn't take the username as such, it takes what ever the users choses as their "Display Name Publicly As" from their profile. They can choose the username, first name, second name, full name, etc.
For BuddyPress extended profiles you can edit that on the following:
wp-admin/admin.php?page=bp-profile-setup
Admin --> BuddyPress --> Profile Fields
Its the Primary one, and cant be deleted.
Seen screenshots for further guidance.
Hope this helps. :-)

Hi Timothy,
I have just realized there must be a problem with my install of buddypress or another plugin causing an issue. I should be getting my name showing in full name field but I get my wordpress username instead.
I'm busy looking into why this is the case.
Thx

I know this might seem like pointing out obvious which I apologise for, but do you have extended profiles enabled?
wp-admin/admin.php?page=bp-general-settings
Admin --> BuddyPress --> Components
Take care

Hi,
I'm reopening this topic since I'm having the exact same problem.
Peter, it seems to me that you're using the Buddyboss theme, is that correct? I'm also using Buddyboss, and have opened a support discussion in their forum:
http://www.buddyboss.com/groups/buddyboss-theme/forum/topic/profile-update/?#post-4644
I wonder if you found a solution to this issue.
Thanks!
