I have a sidebar in my shop using the cart widget. If I add some items to my cart and then click empty cart, the cart is empty, however when I refresh the page the items are all back.

In the situation you describe the cart widget works as you would expect yes. However the original bug still exists. When the javascript that fires to clear the cart is called it should also clear out the relevant cookies, that way it doesn't matter if you refresh the current page.

Thank you for this great question and a significant item to bring up.
That is because by refreshing the page you are feeding the cookie that has the items in it right back into your browser.
Have you tried going forward to another page or product and then click refresh and let me know if it refills the cart?
Please advise.
