Well, i tried to do both - installed 1.1.3 on WP 3.0.5, and installed 1.1.4 on WP 3.1 but both failed with the same kind of message. That doesn't look like it's a version compatibility problem. Any other advice?

Hello kcyeap,
First of all, welcome to WPMU DEV!
I've just setup the latest version on a test site and it's working fine. Could you let me know the following?
Are you using WordPress 3.1?
Are you getting that error upon attempted installation? Activation?
Cheers,
David

Hi KC,
Well, I believe that solves the issue! It's a simple version incompatibility, easily remedied.
If you navigate to the bottom of the Friends project page you'll see the link takes you to all available downloads for the plugin, which is as follows:
http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/friends/download
On that page, you'll see the various version compatibilities. You'll want to use version 1.1.3 of the Friends plugin.
Alternatively, you could upgrade to WordPress 3.1, which is highly advised for security reasons.
Please let me know if you have any further questions or concerns with this!
Cheers,
David
