Child theme is activated.
I made a change in the navigation.php in the parent folder. - changing the group name and see that it takes effect.
When I copy the file to the child folder...it still seems to pull from the parent navigation.php.

Hiya Tober,
It should be pulling the navigation.php file from the child folder if it's copied into the child theme directory.
Can you save the navigation.php file you've edited as a txt and attach it to a forum post. We can take a look and see what's going on. I'll also ask Richie to comment, but it sounds like you've done it correctly.

parent navigation.php shouldn't been edit...just copy paste the navigation.php from parent
to child theme and edit the navigation.php in child theme only.

what version of bp-social you're using...the older version had some issue with child theme
new version fix the locate_template() vs include() issue in child theme
