I've searched the forums, and the site to no avail. It appears to be an issue that has come up in the past, but I still cannot find detailed documentation on the Membership plugin. If I'm missing it, I'd appreciate a pointer to it.

Thanks for your feedback, guys. As the plugin gets more and more advanced the documentation will likewise get more complex, so we'll check to see what else can be clarified in the installation page for starters. http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/membership/installation/
We've also got some video tutorials in mind as well and of course, those articles on the wpmu.org blog are definitely a great help as well. Thanks for mentioning them Jonathan!

There is a definite need for more info (isn't there always - lol)
Lucky for us wpmu.org saw a gap and wrote us some tutorials - you might find them useful in understanding how it all works, I know I did:
