Hi, I am having a few issues with a Google checkout integration. When I enter Taxes for NY, regardless of what state they purchase from, taxes re still charged. Tax is only supposed to be charged if purchases are made from NY, otherwise no taxes should be charged. Google documentation says that Google will handle tax calculations if custom tax tables are not used in the custom cart. So does Marketpress have these tables? Is there any way to let Google handle the tax calculations? Thanks.

Hi DezzyLee99 and first off, welcome to WPMU DEV!
MarketPress actually bases taxes strictly on the location specified for the business. It's clarified by the lead developer and there's a lot of discussion surrounding it in the following thread:

Hope that helps!

I actually read through that before I posted. Aaron says that taxes are charged for in state purchases, but when a client buys from CA they still get charged the NY tax. Only way to avoid that is to set taxes to 0, but then clients who purchase in NY don't get charged tax. Google Checkout handled that before on the old cart, but the cart from Marketpress is either not working or I did something wrong. Anybody shed a little more light?

Hi DezzyLee99,
Let me ask Aaron if he can have a look here as it should only be charging taxes for orders within the state to my understanding.

Hi is there any news yet. It's the busy season and our store is getting a lot of orders, but tax is still be charged to out of state buyers using Google checkout!

You can't let google handle the taxes with this gateway. That being said it should'nt be adding tax to out of state orders. The only reason I can think that it might would be if you are using digital only products in which they don't enter a shipping address at checkout. In that case it will assume they are based in your home state.
In the USA generally digital products are not charged sales tax, so store owners turn off the tax.

Hi Aaron,
I've tried turning off the Taxes in the Google checkout options and it still seems to display this behaviour. Just to be clear, I should just set the taxes using the Store Settings, and disable them in Google correct?
We are also not selling digital products.

I've just deleted the tax settings within Google checkout and I am still getting charged taxes using an address from California. The store is based in NY.

Are they getting added by MarketPress or Google Checkout? If MarketPress I think it will show as a line item on the orders page as well as when checking out.
And are you sure you entered a CA shipping address during the MarketPress checkout?

It must be Marketpress since there is no Tax settings in the Google cart. I do not see a tax line item and I never have. http://www.rablabs.com.
I entered my cousin's CA shipping address for the info, both on my google account as well as the shipping info.

But when you view the order in MarketPress, does it show a tax line item?
I'm trying to narrow down if it's a problem with MP tax calculation or something Google Checkout is overriding for some reason. The Google Checkout gateway is supposed to clear any account tax rules, and create it's own ones based on the MarketPress tax settings/calculation.
Also do you perhaps have Tax inclusive pricing turned on?

Hi Aaron,
I do not have tax inclusive turned on.
When viewing an order, the overview page shows $0.00 for all items in the tax column. When I go into the individual order summary page, I see no references to tax at all.

Ok, so it seems to be something specific to your Google Account settings that is overriding it. Not familiar with those or how they work.

I don't think it is. I've just noticed that in the individual order overview, the total is displayed. And when I do the math, the total is the price + shipping costs + tax. So according to this, buyers not in NY should not have taxes on this total, but everyone has taxes added.

That's the total under the payment info box right? That number is returned from Google Checkout. I was referring to the tax column in the orders list.

Hi Aaron,
I see. Then how come under the tax column in the orders list, orders from NY have a $0 tax? I've set the base location to NY, and entered a NY tax rate.

If you want to verify for sure use the manual payments gateway and see how tax is added. I'm almost positive it's something on Google Checkout.

Hi Aaron,
thanks for helping out. I'll give your suggestion a try and see if that is working for me or not. It seems like whatever I do, the settings stay the same. Turning shipping off and deleting tax settings still does not affect the outcome. Buyers still get charged taxes and orders from outside the USA cannot be processed.

Hi Aaron,
I've tried the manual gateway and know how the tax function works, however it seems that no matter what I do, taxes are still being charged via Google Checkout. I've even started a new sandbox account outside of the client's sandbox account with all my own settings and the taxes are still added. I'm hoping that you guys did the same when developing with the Google Checkout API? Sorry to be a bother but I have not found any help surfing through message boards, Google forums, etc.

With the holidays over now I'll try to find some time to do some testing myself. Note this gateway is still considered a beta so bugs like this are possible, though I don't recall having this issue when I developed it.

Thanks Aaron, I love the plugin, it's the best and most user friendly cart I've used. I really would like to be able to use it to it's full extent. Also the tech support/customer service is top notch!

Sorry to bug you again Aaron, have you had a chance to look at this issue? Issuing a lot of tax refunds to customers currently. Thanks.

Hi, thank you for the update!

So I've ran this through a few times in my sandbox account and can't recreate your issue. The Tax applied at checkout is exactly what MarketPress calculates. This leads me to think that it has to be some kind of setting specific to your account. Maybe you should contact their support.
Lead Developer (joined May 2009) Likes (0)
Ok, never mind. I do see that if there should be no taxes it is still applied.

Found the bug, should be fixed in the next version of MarketPress.
