1. Do I need to park the domains on top of teh main daomain the multisite is installed on?
Sure its possible. You can park or create an addon domain.
It must fall on your /public_html/ where your WordPress multisite is installed.
That works for your own domains. If its a clients domain then personally I prefer them to point their A Record within their DNS so it points to your server. That IP must also fall on your multisite install.
1. Do I need to park the domains on top of teh main daomain the multisite is installed on?
For Domain Mapping you would want to simply point the domain to be mapped at the IP of the install and WordPress should handle it from there in combination with the Domain Mapping plugin mapping the domains to the sub domain that you have designated therein.
2. If I just want to add a new site in the instalation but not use the domain mapping then I get an problem accessing the admin panel
Domain Mapping is used to map TLD's (Top Level Domains i.e. mydomain.com) to sub domains of the WordPress MultiSite install.
Therefore if your MultiSite install is on mydomain.com then all sub domains would be in the format of subdomain1.mydomain.com - subdomain2.mydomain.com - subdomain3.mydomain.com etc.
Now for the sake of our example, you added the sub domain greatdogfood.mydomain.com to your WP install and you developed a beautiful site that when using the browser of your choice you would type in http://greatdogfood.mydomain.com and the site comes up.
Things are going well and you decide to purchase the TLD greatdogfood.com - this is where Domain Mapping comes in - you would point the TLD greatdogfood.com using a DNS "A" record to your MultiSite install IP
Next using the Domain Mapping plugin map the domain to the sub domain greatdogfood.mydomain.com
Now when you type in your TLD greatdogfood.com into your browser the site comes up and it is no longer necessary to address your site with the sub domain greatdogfood.mydomain.com
I hope this helps clarify the flow of the domains and sub domains to include how they relate to each other using the Domain Mapping plugin.
Please let us know if this does not resolve your domain problem and we will certainly dig right into it.
So if i have http://danuberivercruising.cruisevox.com and I want the domain name danubecruises.com to to work in MU I need to point the A record tio the MU install IP and also have wildcard subdomains setup in MU domain?
Wild card is needed for subdomains on your MU install. So anything.domain.com aka *.domain.com. Thats the WordPress requirement for MU.
And yes you are right, the IP must fall upon the MU install.
I have attached some documentation. This is only a second revision of this document so its awaiting peer review for correction. Note for future use, this document will be kept updated and linked to from the project page.
That said, hopefully it should offer you some guidance. :-)
So I have not set up any A records at the mapping domain level but the Doamins are mapping.
If its mapping and you haven't set up A Records, did you use addon domain or something similar. Because somehow it must be pointing to your MU install.

They both look ok to me. I get directed to the login box.
What exactly is the problem there?
Take care.

One more question as iahave confused myself again:-(
I have only redelgated the domains to be mapped to point to the MU install DNS addresses
I have also set up a wildcard domain in cpanel of the MU install in cpanel
So I have not set up any A records at the mapping domain level but the Doamins are mapping.
Is that right?
Regards
JB
