On the Triden default custom homepage, there is a section at the bottom called 'editor's choice'
is this configurable through the admin dashboard UI? Or does it have to be manually populated in code?

That's really just there for show - if you replace it with a text widget (or even a links widget) you should be able to replicate it.
Alternatively these widgets might look snice there:

Aha! And there was me thinking I was going mad! :)
Would be a nice widget to have though: a config UI that allowed a site editor to browse blog posts and pick some to display in the editor's choice widget - drag and drop, even?!

Indeed it would - although I reckon we're gonna have to see some more overall widget management improvements first though.
Also, I believe you can set both of the above to random... handy if you are a little lazy (like me :)
