Getting this:
The Avatars plugin was unable to create directory /var/www/vhosts/worshipfulworkspace.com/httpdocs/wp-content/uploads/avatars/. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
created the directory manually via filezilla and set 777 permission recursive for both uploads and avatars. Still not working.

As Joe mentions it will more likely be a directory above 'avatars' that has insufficient permissions. Can you give the technique he mentioned a shot. I'd only make wp-content anduploads temporarily 777 rather than doing a recursive permission.
Also, just verifying this is a multisite install? Let us know.

Greetings harry.jarrett :-)
I would suggest to temporarily permission the wp-content folder too just to see if it works out the what seems to be permissions problem.
Joe :-)

Thanks. Got it working. Stupid move on my part. I put the uploads in root not content. Your help showed me the error. Thanks.
