I need to know which version of WordPress you are using ( you can check it under your dashboard ). Also is the plugin network activated and in which folder you have placed it "plugins" or "mu-plugins". Please provide as much info as possible.

webabsurdism, welcome to wpmudev. :)
I have a feeling that you;re running a buddypress install since that error is common to buddypress installs. Neither plugin is compatible with buddypress as buddypress has both those features built in.
When you look at each plugin page, along the right hand side is a list of what you can run the plugin or theme with. Please make sure that you check versions before install something new.
Hope this helps,
-drmike
edit: While I;ve got an ear, the Avatar plugin link on the friends plugin page 404's. The 'A' is capsized in the link. It needs to be lowercased.
im running on wordpress Version 3.0.4, with WPMU activated. i did not install buddypress so i don't think thats the cause of the problem.. don't wish to install buddypress either as the current site is pretty heavy and buddypress seems too much to add on.
i've installed both plugins under "plugins" folder

Hi webabsurdism,
Which version of WordPress are you using ? get_blog_option() is a standard WordPress MS function. Are you using this on a Single Site install ?

Mason, I hate to be a pain but I;m still seeing the capital 'A' in the link:
It still 404's.
