A few events will be public, non-paying, and there's no need to collect infos from attendees, so having those buttons show up might be confusing. Is there an easy way to do this.

I am sorry to say that there is no way to do this easily.
You could possibly create some conditional for the page template, however that would be something beyond what we can provide here in a ticket.
