Hello,
I'am creating a database with students.
I've created a "Student" post type with taxonomies and custom fields.
Those students have to be related to a mentor. Mentors have also their own taxonomies and customfields.
When I add a new student, i'd like to associate him to a mentor.
How can I do that ?
Thanks

visitonweb,
Hello and Thanks for using WPMUdev forums!
I would think your method to go about doing this would be determined by how you want to link the students to the mentors. Perhaps you can create a custom taxonomy that lists the Mentors and you can assign the student to it?
This sounds like the easiest option.
Edit to include: Or you can enable the heirarchy on the student post type and use the Mentor Post type as the Parent...
Please advise.

Hello,
OK but I need multiple Fields for Mentors (Last Name, First name, Phone Nr, ...). With Taxonomies, I can Only use the Tag title (or Category title with hierachical).
When adding a Student, I'd like to have a dropdown menu with mentors and chose one of them.
I'd like also to be able to see all the students attached to the mentors.
It would be nice to be able to create a custom field with drowp down menu and select a post type to fill the drop down automaticaly with the concerned post type title.
CustomPress is made to be able to manage databases. It seems logicial to be able to create relations between databases. What do you think about that ?

My deepest apologies for this getting lost!
I think that CustomPress is a tool for building the Database, creating the relationships is a bit much to ask. For instance your ice machine makes Ice Cubes and even drops them in a glass, but it will not pour your lemonade on top. :) Probably a terrible example haha
There are way to many variables for possible relationships (but this would make for an interesting add-on!)
Why can't you create two different custom post types and create a relationship between the two with a taxonomy?
Have you seen this?

I did a quick google for "wordpress custom post type relationships" and it was the first entry :)

Dimitri,
Seems our timing is terrible! First I go out of town for a week, right when we start up here, then a family emergency when we meet back up. My deepest apologies.
My suggestion was only that you may have two custom post types that share categories. That way you can have two post types that are equally important and tie them together with a taxonomy, category.
I would have to look into trying to create something like what you are looking for in order to give you exact parameters for what you are looking to do or to see if it's possible.
Have you already started on this somewhere? I would be interested to see what you come up with.
Have you thought about using Buddypress at all?
Best,
Kimberly

Hello,
Yes, the "private" buddypress website is up and running.
I'd like to add advanced features for administrators (managing team for students).
Would you like to have access on this site ?
How can I send you a private message ? (it would be usefull to have a check box below the "Add Reply to this topic" box like "Send this message as private". I saw this function on woothemes forum and it is very usefull)

Dimitri,
I cannot understand why I do not get updates on this ticket :(
It finally came through to me today!
Not quite sure what you're asking for here, perhaps it's time to start a new ticket? Just to make sure nothing gets lost again? :)
If you prefer to continue here, that's fine too. Just a little clarification on what we are trying to achieve now and we can start rolling in the right direction!
Best,
Kimberly

Did you read this ticket from the first line ? What you do not understand ?
Thanks

I did, but was confused with your mention of Buddypress :)
I've suggested what I thought would work earlier, what you are trying to do is custom to your site. It's been three months since we've started this topic, I'm afraid my memory is a bit foggy, please forgive me.
Have you decided which route you would like to try? Did you want to share taxonomies?
Have you thought of using the Buddypress Private Groups as well? I understand what you would like to do with the post types, and I'm afraid there is still no way that I can suggest you linking them directly. The presence of Buddypress does muddle my understanding a bit as I'm not sure what you are using it for/with as that would affect the overall use of the connections between your mentors and students.
Best,
Kimberly
