But on a serious note, I've done a lot of thinking about techniques for adding avatars to themes and things like bbPress... and I've come to the conclusion that the only way to do this is to simply add it to every theme by hand. Sure you can implement tricks that will hook the author link and get the avatar to show up almost anywhere for free... but it never looks good unless you go into the theme and make it fit with the design of the theme.
Any one care to tell me why I'm looking at this problem wrong? I'm always willing to learn a better solution.

Actually I thought they were already added to the theme packs here.

AFAIK they are... I assume they are... But I had all my themes in place before I signed up for premium and had access to the theme pack here.
