There must be a switch, to kill it. I would leave it installed but then I get even more messages on top of the admin area.

Thank you for this great question and a significant item to bring up.
By far the easiest way to get rid of it and the other messages is to install the WPMU Dev Dashboard and then turn off all the messages by going while logged into the network admin dashboard --> WPMU Dev --> manage --> hide all the messages.
Alternatively it will be necessary to go into the code of each plugin and remove the coding that initiates the message in the first place.
