How would I create a Social networking site??

How would I create a profitable, social networking site using the plugins that are available to me?

Which plugins would I use and in what order would I install them?

The only other criteria would be that it would have to be attractive to perspective new members.

Thanks,

    PC

    Hey Ryan,

Greetings and thanks for your post.

Well the actual plugins required will totally depend on project details. But the main plugin would be BuddyPress which you can use to create a social network on your WordPress site.

Then you can add features to it like : http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/media-embeds-for-buddypress-activity/ to allow status updates, and video posting etc.

You can also use our Membership plugin in order to charge users to get access to certain areas of your site and also control blog creation.

First you will need to install WordPress and then Install and Configure BuddyPress.

If you don't want to use BuddyPresss then you can use our Communities and Friends plugins

I hope that helps. Please feel free to ask if you have more questions on the same.

    Cheers

How would I be able to create and categorize the communities and friends? Would it be possible add upgrades (I.E. membership addons you mentioned)? I have lost faith in buddypress as I was unable to organize the groups and forums into categories.

as long as we are on this discussion, can anyone recommend a good, reliable, and inexpensive host? preferably one specializing in wp.

    Hiya,

    Thanks for posting back.

For categorizing buddypress groups you can use something like : http://wordpress.org/plugins/buddypress-group-tags/

Wordpress hosting review here : http://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/which-wordpress-web-host/

Unfortunately grouping communities is not available with the community plugin atm,

For forums solution if you are not using buddypress : http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/forums/

Let me get more thoughts on this topic with my colleagues @Jack Kitterhing He should be here soon too.

    Cheers

I would appreciate any more light to be shed on this before I move on this, I don't need another disaster.

    Hey Ryan,

Most of the people here will suggest BuddyPress for a social network as it's the community regarding WordPress and BuddyPress.

I am still waiting for @Jack Kitterhing to add his thoughts and it will be a few hours before he chimes in as he is away at the moment.

In the meantime, I found http://wordpress.org/plugins/gra4-social-network/ and http://www.phpfox.com/addons/view/phpfox-wordpress-plugin-and-widget-system/

BuddyPress with a theme like : http://themeforest.net/item/cinematix-buddypress-theme/4959387 can create wonders for you.

Lets wait for more thoughts here.

    Hi there @Ryan

I hope you are well today, I would honestly also recommend BuddyPress myself, with a great BuddyPress theme from here http://themeforest.net/category/wordpress/buddypress

There aren't really any other proper social plugins for WordPress apart from http://wordpress.org/plugins/gra4-social-network/ which my colleague @PC mentioned above.

You should be able to organize both forums and groups with BuddyPress, even more so if you was using group forums with BBpress, which would be a good option.

What sort of upgrades would you be looking to offer members? Do you have any more details you can share about the project?

    Thank you!

    Kind Regards
    Jack.

The best way to respond to this would be to say that it would be a site with groups and communities, including games and classifieds, but would offer upgraded memberships. The idea of offering a marketplace has also been tossed around. I realize that this may not be very specific, I just don't have the details worked out.

    Hey Ryan,

Groups can be controlled by BuddyPress and you can have more controls on Group creation and access to different parts of your site using our Membership Plugin : http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/membership/

The idea of offering a marketplace has also been tossed around.

You can use MarketPress plugin for that : http://premium.wpmudev.org/project/e-commerce/

However you will also need WordPress Multisite if you want to allow people to create stores on your network.

    Hello Ryan,

    Thanks for posting back.

If you haven't started working on it yet, we can't assume on what all errors will come along way. The best thing to do is install WordPress first and then install BuddyPress.

Once you have activated BuddyPress, configure it so that it works. eg creating groups etc works fine. Test for registration etc using different browsers.

Once you have setup BuddyPress and got that working, kindly let us know so that we can proceed further.

Here are a few links which will help you along the way !
