Hiya,
Multi-DB currently does not support WPMU 2.7. However, we'll be looking into this very soon.
As for whether or not it will work with BuddyPress, I'm afraid I can't answer that as I haven't tried it yet.
Lastly, if you only have 3000 blogs I wouldn't advise going with 4096 databases unless you plan on eventually having several hundred thousand or more.
Thanks,
Andrew

We discussed buddypress here:

There should be a couple more threads as well if you want to search.

Hi Andrew,
I want to develop my site to more than 50000 in future.
Now what's your idea?
Thanks.

Some quick math shows that for 50k blogs, a 256 db install would average about 5k files per db. That's well below the normal limits most OSes and hosting platforms place for files with a subdirectory.
Math:
50k blogs * 10 tables for each blog = 500k db tables.
500k db tables * 3 files per db = 1,500k files.
1,500k files / 256 dbs = 5,800 files per db.
For 4096 dbs, it would be less than 400 files for each db.
1,500k files / 4096 dbs = 366 files per db.

I'd go with 256.
Thanks,
Andrew

I have to agree. That's what we're going for our installs.
If you;re concerned about future growth, you could always delete any blogs marked as spam or deleted by user. I'd wait 30 days or something similar. Leave time for an appeal by the end user.
edit: If you do go that route, please make sure you put something in your ToS about url reuse though. Cover your you know what.
