In BuddyPress/Forums I click on the Install Group Forums and receive the following error: You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.
Where can I start looking for this?

I've seen this a couple if times now on members installs never anything definite to fix the issue though.
Is BuddyPress installed on the primary blog? I ask because this chap seems to have had the same problem:
http://buddypress.org/community/groups/installing-buddypress/forum/topic/install-group-forums-permissions-error-buddypress-installation-on-multisite-subdomain/
I'm sure I recall something in their trac but can't locate that now, sorry.
Let me know how your setup is.
Take care.

I'm not sure what version you're using, but it may also be related to this bug, which has a patch available:
http://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3866
You might try applying the patch and seeing if that fixes it.

Thanks Sarah :)
I'm sure I recall something in the trac for 1.5 as well but I just can't see it now. Must have been something else I'm confusing it with. :-/
Take care.

Timothy and Sarah,
Thank you for looking at this.
Yes, BuddyPress is on the primary blog. I get the error there.
I have several subsites in the testing environment that are all BuddyPress enabled and configured.
willhendy noted, "The key is to install group forums before changing buddypress onto a secondary site/blog."
This sounds a little confusing. Install group forums where? On the primary site? So should I turnoff BuddyPress on subsites and install Group Forums on the primary site.
Sarah, I downloaded the patch to test it but I don't know what to do with it?

The patch Sarah referred to is for 1.6 which isn't yet released. We are still on 1.5.5 currently.
So I'm not sure if that relates to the current release as well, you would need to ask them on the trac about that to be sure.
From what I gather willhendy had his install enabled so it would function on sub sites as well. Do you have that enabled?
I got the impression he first installed BP, then activated the group forums, and finally enabled BuddyPress to be used on subsites.
Let me know how you get on.
Take care.

I note: Well, I can spool up another fresh install of WP, install BuddyPress on the primary site and the activate Group Forums and then create a subsite and see if that works.

Timothy,
I installed a fresh WP/BP install and get the same error.
There is the workaround Sarah mentioned but I don't know how to install it.

To use the patch Sarah mentioned you first need to install BuddyPress 1.6-bleeding which isn't officially released yet.
I believe that is what this also relates to:
http://buddypress.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/3840
Which version is it your are running?
Thanks.

Timothy,
I am running BuddyPress 1.5.5 and WP 3.3.2
As I noted this is a completely fresh install of WP / BP with no plugins specifically to test for this problem, which I am also having on another site.
Can you duplicate the problem?

It installs and runs perfectly fine for me. I also have the bbPress plugin working fine as well there.
Are these both on the Bitnami Stack?
Does it also happen on the other server? Or are you still not able to test there?
Take care.

I got it to work.
The trick is to install BuddyPress without 'multiblog' enabled and to setup bbPress on the primary site. Then turn on multiblog and you are good to go for multisite BuddyPress with bbPress.

@ericslangley - Hey Eric - I sent you a few points as well. Thanks for sharing the solution of how to get forums installed. I just removed the define ( 'BP_ENABLE_MULTIBLOG', true ); from wp-config to move the buddypress menu back to the network admin and everything worked like a charm.
