You may or may not be aware but the first BETA of BuddyPress was released today:
http://buddypress.org/2012/06/buddypress-1-6-beta-1/
Whilst it is in Beta that obviously means its not ready for production use but still you could be testing this and providing them feed, reporting any issues you come across so that we (the WordPress community) could have it quicker. :-)
If you think you’ve found a bug, or have feedback, please leave them a message direct on their support forums or report a bug on their bugtracker.
EDITED: Beta 2 is now out:
Have fun! :)

If you are upgrading a sandbox install from 1.5 then you will need to run through the update process:
Admin --> Network [if in multisite] --> Updates --> Update BuddyPress
/wp-admin/network/update-core.php?page=bp-wizard
And run through the three steps on screen.
All BP options are then found under:
Admin --> Network [if in multisite] --> Settings --> BuddyPress
You will also have an Activity menu option. See screen.

Really love the new yet simplistic Privacy options in the 1.6 beta! :)

I've been waiting for this update to come out ever since I heard about the privacy settings because I need it for a project. Judging from your screenshots though it is all for nothing because the settings are only for admin, there is not an option let the user set privacy settings on the edit account page.
:(
Maybe they can add that before the official release...

Hey Nick.
The second screen there is of a profile in my last post
Users can change their privacy per field.
You can choose in admin (first screenshot in my last post) to enforce that so it can't be changed on some.
Take care.

The built-in privacy options are definitely welcomed!
I just wish there was baked-in security via file/folder-level permissions on the /uploads/ and /blog.dir/ directories, and that privacy options could then be used fully and properly on file uploads - whether it be uploaded documents, photos, or any other content in files rather than database data.

Time to check it out. Hopefully it doesn't break our template

Thanks for that notice, I'll check it out then. Essentially I'm going to need to add that option on the front end. One developer I work with right now ran some test and said there's still too many errors coming up in the beta that for production we're probably going to have to wait, just an FYI from our experience so far.
Sorry I didn't run it so I don't know the errors he ran into, just relaying the feedback.

I wouldn't use a beta in a production environment, its really only for testing, I wouldn't even want to use an RC.
The options are on the front end for users as they edit their profile.
I'm guessing the errors might be due to an older theme?
Seems ok to me on the whole whilst testing with the theme they ship.
Take care.

Any other big changes you can preview Timothy?

Their release notes are not ready yet so there isn't a conclusive list of new things unfortunately. Paul did mention that one is coming soon.
I suppose the integration with the WP Admin Bar is a fair change which I enjoy.
I like that all your account options are now under your name and any notifications also appear in the WP Admin Bar.

Timothy:
Where have you read about that? The account and notifications options appearing in the admin bar?
I've been trying to custom hack that for weeks, nay, MONTHS.
Would be THRILLED to see this happen.

In my install. :) Screen attached.
This is my sandbox install:

I break it often, things always change. Break and fix whilst testing and debugging things so what I'm saying is it you can take a look but don't be alarmed if you see things bodged up a little. lol
Take care.

Will there be a way to set the privacy on profile fields so that only the member and admin can see them?
Support Chimp (joined March 2010) Likes (0)
Hey there Jenread.
Thats a great question but as I see it at the moment the only options are:
Anyone
Logged In Users
My Friends
I do think an option for owner/admin only would be an excellent addition.
You would however need to make that suggestion direct to them over at BuddyPress.
Take care.

Ok! I am thinking about this Tim. I just updated to WP 3.4.1. lol I tried BP last year. My first attempt with WP I did a multisite w/BP, s2member and I think something called role scoper. I was trying to turn Wp into drupal. No I didn’t try to read any manuals. Now that I’ve been working with WP, MultiSite, and reading all the manuals; I think I am ready for BP. Since it’s my first real attempt “with a little understanding” Should I wait until the bugs are worked out, or just jump right in??? Of course it’s my decision, but would like some opinions! Anyone!

Hey @MTB1701 sorry for the late reply, I've been away for a few days. James is over from Aus. :)
Thats ok, I never read the manuals. lol
The beta mentioned here is for testing, the idea behind the post is to run through those bugs and get them reported to the BuddyPress team. This will help them fix problems and get a stable release out much quicker.
You can use the older version though, it will be upgradable so when 1.6 final is released you can just update then.
For the current stable version you can download that here:

Take care.

The second beta is now out:

:)
Test it and let them know any bugs, come on lets get the final here sooner! :)
Thanks.

Tim! I have not seen you so excited; you’re like a jackrabbit on a date. lol
Seriously though I am wondering if the 2011 theme is compatible with BuddyPress. I really did like the default BuddyPress theme, but I have spent the past 2 days looking for ways to trick out the 2011 theme. I can’t wait to show you. Sliders, over 12 custom color selectors, I think I can even turn the Nav menu into the footer, well at least place it there. lol & I found a list that went through the css line by line. Sleep must be ignored for now. :) Have a Good weekend.

Nah Twenty Eleven isn't, sorry.
But for 1.5 of BP:

Nothing wrong with being a Jackrabbit ;)
Take care.

How soon when 1.6 is realeased do you work on your own themes to make them compatible?
I have Social installed and there seem to be some bugs on Social with 1.5.6.
What's a good place to share these bugs?
Thank you,
Giovanni

Generally we aim to provide updates within 24 to 48 hours of the final release.
If there are any issues in the current versions of our themes with 1.5.6 you can open a new thread for those so that our developers can address them.
Thanks.

I'm currently developing my project with 1.6 Beta 2
I'm not in full production mode yet and I'm hoping to be ahead of the curve once it's completed.
So far, it performs much better than 1.5 and it has plenty of new features. Most of the code looks like it's been optimized so that's a huge + in my book.

It is pretty sweet isn't it! :)

Can't wait.
Any idea when it's coming out? Or a newsletter I can signup to be kept in the loop?
Thanks,
Giovanni
PS - Does WPMU DEV have a newsletter?
Support Chimp (joined March 2010) Likes (0)
Hey.
That question would be best addressed by them although I'm not sure they would commit to a firm date other than soon.
We do offer a newsletter which you can signup to, usually when release like WP and BP are made we send out some kind of mailer about compatibility and such.
You can subscribe in the footer if you are not already.
You can also find it to the right of wpmu:

Take care.

Oh yea, I'm really digging it! I can't wait for it to be final, but I'm probabbly going to core hack it to get my blog categories working :( looks like they're never going to add a hook to the blogs loop :(

The moved the settings page on the menu, and it seems a little lighter (faster)
The new activity thing I haven't gotten to play with too much yet, but if it adds the ability to "Like" any post on the network that sure would be awesome!
