The request is very simple.
I think it is time WPMU DEV went mobile.
I mean please, create an "excellent, worries free" plugin to serve as a mobile detector, AND
Get the provided themes (studio, holder, blogs-mu, product, daily, etc) working on "every" mobile phone in the market.
I know it is a real challenge especially with themes and all their customizations. But hey. You have proven yourselves so many times before.
After all, it is the 21st century.
I think that most of the people here think as professionals. And there is nothing more un-professional than having your basic site or registration page NOT mobile when every customer/subscriber asks for mobile themes.

Hiya!
It's not something that comes up often to be honest, so I'll be interested to hear how many other people are after a mobile plugin or mobile versions of our themes...
I would love a mobile plugin really to sniff devices and display a specific theme based on device type. I have used WP touch & Wp touch pro in the past although these are a little tedious to setup.
For me the ultimate plugin for mobile integration would be to simplify it down. Like snuff device select theme.
I don't really care if the wpmudev themes go mobile but being able to link to a custom theme with out any headaches would be great. Mobile themes are easy to create would be useful for say market press to be able to have a theme designed for iPad / mobile touch devices.
MarketPress already has a mobile theme - SimpleMarket. Mobile themes are now or should be using responsive formats to work on ALL and mobile not just sniff and switch.
I would be more interested in a mobile app that integrates wordpress, buddypress and bbpress's forums. A true mobile app would be much better than just a theme.

+1,
and I agree marketpress's theme SimpleMarket - to quote Tammie is "using responsive formats to work on ALL and mobile not just sniff and switch"
Really great job on that theme ;)
+1 without a doubt.
Even though WP Touch Pro claims to be MultiSite compatible, it isn't, and therefore a truly multisite Mobile plugin (with theme options) would be awesome!
@Jonathan: Thankyou that's really the point... a theme shouldn't be just for mobile OR just for non mobile it can be for both using responsive styling.
The BuddyPress mobile theme was in my opinion great in parts and others it was trying to create a mobile experience where perhaps a responsive one should have been the better route.
I think perhaps a slight mindshift from 'mobile theme' to a theme that adapts to work on mobile is the way forward. Now.. back end, that's a different story and should be where a more 'app' approach has to take place. However, WordPress 3.3 may change even that as there is a team working on responsive theme for the back end.
It really once you get your head around it makes no sense to change a theme for a device when you can use the existing theme and adapt. Therefore you have a consistent experience for all. You can even remove some 'less useful' elements like menus and other elements you may not want on a mobile version. You'll find this is why WP Touch and BuddyPress mobile along with interest issues aren't as current as could be - the need is shifting with the advancement in responsive design.
Just think of a world where you can take any theme and it will work for a range of devices - this is what responsive design is bringing to you. No need to have a default 'mobile' lesser experience without branding or you have to shoehorn your branding into. No need to just change colours as that's all you can to brand. It's just a smaller, lighter version of the original theme.
More and more people are using mobile devices to access the internet and their social networks... so seems to me it's a no brainer. I am currently building a site / network and of the mere 18 members I have, already I have had one girl mention how unfriendly it is to navigate the site with her phone and asked if there was something I could do about it. A better solution for phone users seems inevitable.
There are a few simple things you can do out of the box to help your theme. Infact I do plan on doing a post over at wpmu.org (which is responsive btw).
Nice, thanks for that Tammi :) Seems that would be useful code... so please forgive my simple question, but can you also tell me where should I insert those three bits of code?
Not sure if this is exactly what you are looking for but you could checkout PluginBuddy Mobile at http://pluginbuddy.com/. I have it but haven't gotten to really play around with it yet.
Thanks Charles. I hadn't seen them before.
My biggest interest there is the BuddyPress backup plugin.
I don't recall seeing anything like that here at wpmudev and I've not had any luck finding what seems to be a decent, reliable solution for full backups and restore functions.
I think this is great idea but I personally would say no (to plugins), because there is so much work to be done on improving existing plugins and mobile optimization would take much time. If you hire additional stuff for this work, maybe +1, but not for now.
I like Tammie's input on this. The shift is going on to responsive design in themes, and has been for the last 6 months. Using plugins to accomplish mobile compatibility is only a half-step. I've been using WP Touch for a while now and just don't like what it displays.
Using a responsive theme is a better solution because of the all important branding that goes into your site. We all put a lot of effort into associating the look of our sites with our brand. The minute we start looking at mobile plugins that effort goes out the window.
Instead, what we should be pushing really hard for, are good-looking responsive themes. Here, at WPMU DEV, we should be pushing Tammie and Richie to develop more responsive themes that also work with BuddyPress. Another argument would be to convince them to see if they can update the existing themes published by WPMU DEV in to being responsive themes (reason for this is that on an established site, changing themes is akin to rebranding. Being able to use the same, or visually similar theme, but as responsive is a good step).
To summarize, pushing for mobile plugins is taking a step backward and not leveraging the power and technology in smart phone and tablet web browsing. Responsive design is a far more efficient, and even cutting-edge approach to handling the mobile problem.
+1 I don't get a lot of mobile visitors, but I do get some requests for mobile themes from site admins. My site admins are starting to use QR codes to promote their sites, so I expect this will be an increasingly popular request.
"The ability to click and buy on a mobile device is making a huge difference in mobile commerce. “It’s now an expectation that if you see it on your screen, you can click and buy it,” Mary Meeker , top internet analyst in a recent presentation on Internet trends
We would love a mobile-enabled store theme (or themes).
I've been following this thread for some time with interest as I develop multi-purpose websites for clients. Multi-purpose = One Site that works on Desktop / Laptop Browsers, Adapts to Integrate into Facebook Pages and auto-detects mobile devices and renders the same content perfectly for the range of small screens.
The percentage of "mobile only" web users is on the increase as more and more mobile devices get more capable, screens are getting better and much easier to read and mobile broadband performance is ever improving...
In the US, apparently, around 25% of web users never use a desktop / laptop computer. They use nothing more than their mobile device. We can safely assume a similar number in other countries like the UK, Australia etc.,
So it is essential that websites are adaptable to smaller screens and provide an easy user experience.
But; it doesn't need a plugin.
I recently wrote a series of design tips at http://fbshops.co.uk/facebook-design-tips/ which detail some coding I use to get one site doing everything a small business needs it to do. I'm currently working on the next instalment which will show the coding used to determine what browsing app / device the user is using.
But, in summary, all your site needs to do is:
Be sized right - obviously. I go for something either fixed at 520 (Facebook page integration width) or a fluid layout with minimum size set to 520 and a max-size too (to prevent the fluid layout looking daft on a desktop browser and allow it to expand somewhat on mobiles, iPads, etc).
Detect if the content is being viewed inside an iFrame - which basically means it is being viewed inside Facebook (or someone has for some crazy reason embedded your site in theirs - doh?). if (window.top!=window.self) sort of thing sorts this out.
Detect mobile devices (Apple, Windows Mobile, Android, Blackberry, etc) and set the viewport size to suit the max / min size or fixed size of the site.
var mobile = (/iphone|ipad|ipod|android|blackberry|mini|windowssce|palm/i.test(navigator.userAgent.toLowerCase()));
if (mobile) {
And then apply additional CSS or content... You get the idea.
<meta name="viewport" content="width=520" /> tells the mobile browser window to "become" the size you want it. So if the mobile screen is 480 the browser will fit 520 into it. If the screen is 768 (iPad) then the 520 will fill the screen preventing unsightly blank areas on the left and right.
Phew! That was supposed to be a "quick" summary... Oops!
Anyway, it's all possible and relatively easy - without adding more plugins to your site.
There's many ways to kill a cat (as they say - not that I advocate any killing of cats) and this is my way. If you know better ways I'm all ears.
Hope that is helpful... Enjoy making your sites compatible for all users.
I'd love to see a mobile plugin as well. I'm not a developer. So, I don't know what is involved. But I would prefer one that works with all themes. Maybe something that strips away the bulky designs and functions of a full on design and let's you set a toned down version.
Me too, but rather than making a "mobile plugin" just fix current plugins and themes to use the responsive design so we don't really have to have multiple versions of things as it only adds more pain to testing and maintenance.

This theme was originally designed for photographers however it's very flexible and most importantly is has a custom CSS area that you can use to override and customize most of the plugins and displays to make it your own.
If you visit my site (still under the redesign but functional and making me money) http://www.kausvideo.com
I started out with one of their themes but totally customized everything for my needs. The best part is that it works well with the mobile devices.

There are a few simple things you can do out of the box to help your theme. Infact I do plan on doing a post over at wpmu.org (which is responsive btw).
http://wpmu.org/
Few things you could do just as suggestions @ShawnJason would be this:
<?php wpmuorg_mobilenav_dropdown('mainnav'); ?>This is a function we use to show for mobile devices a 'slimmed down' navigation.
Then you can use a switcher like this:
Not meaning to thread hijack just hopefully showing a method to solve your current issue but keep the theme :)
A few great responsive links are:
