Went with Nginx in case anyone is wondering. You can install lighttpd 1.5.x on Debian but you have to do it manually and there's dependants that you have to install manually as well and it;'s all a pain.

Do you have to install libphp-phpmailer to get wpmu to mail stuff? My install isn't sending anything out and I noticed that libphp-phpmailer wasn;t installed so I added in and did a restart on nginx. Did you have to do anything else besides that?
edit: With what I found online doesn;t mention anything about phpmailer so I'm at a bit of a loss here.

Nginx for sure. I have rewrite rules for wpmu and bbpress if you need theme

Thanks for the offer and I may take you up on it but the rewrite rules have been beat to death on the mu forums.
now if you happen to have them for wp-super-cache....
