I've seen a couple other threads, none of which really have an answer.
Is there some straightforward way to incorporate a basic captcha (preferably reCaptcha) into the Membership plugin at step one?
I know that the developer is currently working on an update to this plugin. But since there is no way to know when the release date may be, and no telling what other issues the update may bring, that doesn't really help.
Since Membership actually allows accounts to be created prior to the payment step, it seems a no-brainer that there should be a simple way to incorporate something as basic as a captcha.
The implementation I'm working with uses only WordPress - no BuddyPress installation.

Hiya airfoil,
We're getting closer and closer to having the Membership update out the door, but until we're able to do that and add in feature requests such as this one, it's an area requiring custom development. You can take a look at the built-in registration forms and use a hook to implement a captcha solution or grab a developer to assist you with it over on our Job Boards here: http://premium.wpmudev.org/wpmu-jobs/
We DO want to get to this, but for now you may want to disable incomplete registrations and see if that helps cut down on any folks who don't choose a subscription.
