If there is one thin that I have learned about plugins... everything is possible, it is a matter of figuring out HOW.
If I am not mistaken I believe that this feature is part of the Membership Plugin using the built in WP register which also uses that option.
Look in the wp-admin left column > Settings > General and look for registered users. Once you change this to "anyone can register" and set the lever at which they are by default, you should be able to do that.
Once implemented also look left col > appearance > widgets > and look in the available widgets for the login widget to drag into a widget area in a sidebar, etc.. (There are also MANY free plugins that deal with customizing the login/register style).
Hope this helps and if I am way off base, can you provide some additional information for what specifically it is that you want to do?

Hello jasonsummers24 and Kerry,
As very well explained by Kerry, you can do this by adding in the widget.
btw, if you are using the membership plugin, all sorts of registration should be disabled. i.e. you do not have to set "Anyone can register" in WordPress Dashboard > General Settings.
Membership takes care of the registration process completely :)
If you are not using membership, like Kerry mentioned, you have to set "Anyone can Register" to true for users to register.
Hope that makes sense. Good luck!

@Arun Oh! Good to know. I just downloaded Membership recently and have not had a chance to implement. Now I know where to start. Thanks!

Hey Kerry, You are welcome!
We have a huge manual for Membership, Tim wrote it: http://premium.wpmudev.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/Membership-Docs-3027.pdf
That should provide lots of insights into Membership, its our biggest plugin :)

HA! That I knew and I have actually downloaded but actually finding time to read it... another story. (Aren't operator manuals a lot like Terms of Service? - Do people really read them?)
Hoping I can find some time soon as I really need this for my own site!

lol, usually you won't have to read them, but Membership is no every-day plugin, you are gonna need it ;)

Hi Jasonsummers24,
this post of mine http://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/shortcode-for-login-on-membership-plugin#post-234459 explains the different choices you have for the login thing in Membership. Important to know: Membership just relies on the login for wordpress ...
Have fun!!
