Hello,
I have a general question about the update-notifications.php file. The documentation states to upload it to /mu-plugins. What if I don't have WP MU enabled. Do I upload it /plugins?
I did not do this for Buddypress because I didn't have MU enabled, but I'm starting to think I might need to.
Thanks.

Right now, leave it out. It's currently having an issue and has a pending upgrade. I believe we've discussed this a couple of times now.
I think you;re the first to ask about the directory on the single install and I;ve not tried it myself. I'd go ahead an try it in the plugins subdirectory. You could always remove it afterwards if ti didn't work.
I would be trying it on a testbed first of course. :)

Yeh, new version for that is very high on our list, sorry for the annoyance in the meantime.

I'd also add that the mu-plugins folder is not just for WordPress multi-site. The folder is used by all versions of WordPress and necessary for some of our plugins here - even if not on multi-site.
Thanks!
