Update: The new WPMU DEV Multi Domain plugin is now available which addresses these issues - go grab it now!
Hello.
I want to run one wpmu on domain1.com, domain2.com and domain3.com.
I want all domains to point to the same starting page (not a problem).
Here is the thing:
When users sign up, I want them to be able to select blogname.domain1.com, blogname.domain2.com OR blogname.domain3.com.
Wh't I DON'T want is "blogname" to be taken on all 3 servers by the same user.
Will Multi-Site Manager do this for me? When reading about it, it seems that it will only let me point blogname.domain1.com to domain2.com which is not what i want to do. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

Thank you for all your input and thank you andrea_r for finding what is probably the solution.
I have one question about Pick-a-site though. The descriptions says that the user will be "redirected to the selected sites sign-up page". But I want one installation of wpmu and basically have all 3 domains pointed to the same site. So when blog1.domain1.com is called for I don't want blog1.domain2.com to be "taken". And I want to do this while having all domains pointed to the same site. Will Pick-a-Site do this for me?
I guess I could point domain2 to dom2.domain1.com and create a a copy of the main blog there, making new blogs there blog1.dom2.domain1.com but there should be an easier way.
Yep, it all works on one install. It "redirects" becasue if they are at the signup page for domain1 and they want a blog on domain2, then they have to sign up on domain2's signup page.
Which, for point of reference, is the exact same page, only it says its different in the address bar.
My only concern with this is that it creates new database tables for each domain. That itself is not the issue as I assume it's for the best.
So I guess I install wpmu on my primary domain and install all the plugins I want.
I then create new pages and clone ALL database tables? This is really my issue. It seems that from the second there are several sites I have to do every setting once/domain. That's OK but I want to be able to install everything and then just clone everything. Feels wrong to clone all database tables tho. Should I do that?
And as for i.e. sending a mass mail, I would have to send one from each domain right? I'm only gonna have 3 domains so its not really a problem but I'm not certain which tables are separated and which are not.
If all tables are separated I'm assuming I need to clone all database tables when creating the "new sites"?
I agree, it would be a very nice additional feature we could offer, we'll look into the feasibility of updating / rewriting http://wpmudev.org/project/Pick-a-Site so that it works.
Sounds great!
It would be nice if it could be intergrated with the supporter/members/upgrade plugin(s) so that free blogs just get the (admin selectable?) default domain while paid members can choose thier domain.
Having a multiple domain option without having to copy/clone database tables for each domain would be a great feature. I'd really like to have that for a new project i'm planning and i'd really like to see such a plugin (or the updated pick-a-site to work with 2.9)
A newer version for WP3.0 is in the works. I would have loved to release it on time for the release of 3.0 but I'm having my finals at the moment so it will have to wait until June 2010. Will include single sign-on as well.
I'm sure a financial incentive to the author would get it done much quicker...
- Let user choose domain when create a blog
- having a parked domain on main site (domain1.com = domaine2.com)
are critical and stratégical.
The public plugins are trustless (does this word exists ???) and for professionnal use I can not let "someone" create such a plugin, without any kind of support and no update garantee.
I dont konw If I am the only one need this, but for me it is really critical, since I will have 3 thematic gamers networks with more than 200 domains to manage for them.
For the moment the dev of those farms is stopped waiting for that function. In fact, I dont understand how the WP core cannot manage that as it seems so evident to me that all farmes have to propose several domains !
At least, I have found WPhive. Incredible concept, very much easier than multi network, great, etc etc, but still without any professionnal suivi, no garantee, etc.
Please guys what kind of motivation is necessary for you to consider a "wpmudev multidomains management" plugin for farms ????
I'm going to throw it a +1 here as this would be great. We are preparing to launch a service on one domain at this time but have purchased nearly 20 others to slowly add in the near future.

Good question, I haven't used that personally so would be interested in hearing other peoples perspectives.

Will Multi-Site Manager do this for me?
No.
Unless it has changed, the multisite manager does nothing to alter the default WPMU signup process.
What you are looking to do probably could be done though.

I would like this too, would be cool to add this as a plugin here. It appears that Pick a Site is not being updated...

SOSblog uses the exact same feature you mentioned.
Users go to the signup page, chooses a theme and then he can select a domain for his blog from the dozens of the listed ones.
Visit here to see it in action.
Or simply take a look at a screenshot below :

I personally think it's a great feature that many users will start to use once released.
Hopefully there'll be a positive opinion from the devs.

Nice example Kenneth, that would be soooo nice. It really increases the customization of a user's site address and overall personalization. Love it.
+1 one vote for me on that!

Hello there.
Sorry to up that but I do insist.
These functionnalities :
- Let user choose domain when create a blog
- having a parked domain on main site (domain1.com = domaine2.com)
