I've been testing the new Pro Sites upgrade for Supporter, and all looks good so far; we are opening our site in November and look forward to using it. One thing I have been increasingly desiring, though, is not just the ability to add Premium Plugins per Pro level, but also the ability to *remove* them as well.
For example, we'd like to give the users of our two paid levels the ability to put ads on their site. I've thought that we could give the first paid level a somewhat basic ad plugin to work with - say, e.g., Quick Adsense - and then give the higher level a more comprehensive solution - like, e.g., the very popular Ad Injection plugin. Problem with this, though, is we'd have to *remove* the basic solution for the higher-level users - and right now there is no way to do this in Pro Sites.
Or here's an even better example: We'd like to automatically add our own Google Adsense ads on our unpaid blogs using a plugin, and then remove them for the paid levels. Same thing: currently can't be done.
I don't expect you guys to mod your plugin just for me; and I don't really have an idea how helpful this would be for other webmasters. But I am wondering if someone knows how I could mod the Pro Sites plugin to do this. It's occurred to me that one of the guys or gals who worked on it might know the exact lines of code to add to get it to do this. Thanks, incsub, for all the wonderful work you do; and my thanks in advance --

Hiya!
That is definitely a cool idea....
You might actually be able to implement this as an add-on. There's an article here (and notice the comments) about using code to de-activate plugins: http://blog.iredlof.com/2009/06/how-to-de-activate-wordpress-plugin-using-php-code/
That code could go into a custom add-on for Pro-Sites although I'm not clear on the specifics so I'll ask others to chip in...

Neat idea. My understanding is that we do eventually plan to provide total granular control for each level in pro-sites. Work in progress - as is everything :)
Nice find though, Phil! Definitely would be cool to see something implemented that way.

Ah, very nice! I remember going over activation of a plugin within a theme before but never considere deactivation of a plugin. Definitely has a great use given the scenario you mentioned conkhead!
Hopefully won't be too long before Pro Sites has that integrated.
Cheers,
David
