Hi,
I've just tested Rebranded Meta Widget and it doesn't change anything on a test site using Arclite template (133 themes pack). I thought this plug-in would replace the link to WordPress.org on every site but it doesn't. I've not checked with other themes. Are you using it on edublogs? If yes, you have some problems too. This blog links to Wordpress.com, this one to Wordpress.org, etc.
Thank you for feedback.
Laurent

If you actually add the meta widget to your theme you will see it rebranded. Many themes have a hardcoded meta widget in their sidebar that shows if no widgets are added.
We don't use it on edublogs.

Continuing on about the hardcoded links, removing the wp.com/org links from all over a theme is one of the items we have on out theme checklist that we run through when we're adding in a new theme to our rollout pack for client installs.
Here's an older list of what we checked for in themes:

Ok, but I'm refering to your 133 themes pack and I thought this kind of hardcoded links would already have been removed. I don't want links to commercial competitors like Wordpress.com showing in the default meta widget of my customers, do you?
Thank you drmike for sharing this list of tips. But maybe the links to Wordpress.com could be removed from the 133 themes pack where they are not required for legal purpose (credit). Example: default meta widget, generator meta tag, etc.
There are approximately 10 plugins refering to Wordpress.com in your 133 themes pack. In most cases this is not visible by normal users (ex: css files), but it some cases it will be shown on the blogs/sites.

I'll let the theme dev know about those. Note that the default widgets usually call the wp_meta() function which returns those links, so that's what you would search for, most likely in sidebar.php files.

I always thought those hardcoded wp.com links were theme designers hoping to get their designs on the wp.com site.
Gotta admit that I agree but we even take the extra step of removing the wp.org links as well. Not for credit reasons (although I have to admit that sending them yet more links isn't something that makes me feel peachy keen inside) but I would rather have clients had to local help sites when they need help. How many times headed over to wp.org first (and wp.com in fact) on the old mu forums?
This is one of the reasons why I wanted to put the theme pack up somewhere on a trac/svn and put them out for a group effort.

Ok, it would be great if this can be checked as I'm sure I'm not the only one that would be annoyed by this kind of "details". Thank you for your support!

I also strip out those "send me a donation" popups some plugin designers add to their plugins but that's just me. (In my/our defense, we donate to 1-3 open source authors/designers/whatevers every month across out platforms. Heck, we even gave to a wp plugin designer once.)

This is certainly good advice! I will check my plug-ins right now :-)

Trying to remember what else we do with wp plugins.
We edit the plugin url to point at the local faq site so folks can find documentation about the plugin. We edit the links in the description as well. We do put links in the FAQs giving credit to the authors just to mention.
We strip out any CSS call and place that in a single css file and hook that call in wp_head. Saves about 20-30 separate calls I believe plus cleans up the head of outputted html.
There;s something else too but I;m drawing a blank.
edit: Check for weird outside calls, advertising, and embedded code too. Not what I was thinking of though....
