Hi bobrandklev,
I've taken a cursory look at various calendar plugins, mostly in the form of events plugins, but I don't recall looking into Multisite specific or Multisite compatible ones.
I'll mention this to a few of the guys over here and see if they've got any ideas to add.

Depends on what your needs are. Do you want to just offer the event/calendar function on individual sites and not display them on the main site? If you don't need network features there's a couple paid plugins with free versions that I've used in the past:
Event Espresso: http://eventespresso.com/
Events Manager: http://wp-events-plugin.com/
We want to offer our supporter sites a basic event calendar. Event Espresso is a great plugin but too much and I'm not looking for ways to manage events but a way for a club or company to show upcoming events.
Thanks you so much for the plugin link! I try it out now.
Do they sell multi-site license? Their developer package only allow "Install on 10 sites". With multi-site and domain mapping, we would need license for unlimited domain/sites, am I right?
Question #2, do you also use this plugin together with Event + by WPMU DEV on the same site?
(I need event + to allow sub site admins to sell tickets, at the same time I also need a Google calendar alike feature to list all the non-RSVP or non-ticketing events.)
I'm just quickly jumping in here since I actually tried the Events Calendar recently.
I found that it had only basic options available on the free version. And I wasn't able to use the two calendars together, that is Events + and the Events Calendar.
All in all the Events Calendar is a nice plugin, I guess it just depends on your requirements.
Thank you for sharing the link with the Events Calendar with the Community. We always support our WP plugins community and I personally like to try out these on a regular basis to know what is the latest talk at WP.org.
All the best in setting up your sites and glad to have you as a member of our community.

I will probably go with the free version of http://codecanyon.net/item/events-calendar-pro-wordpress-premium-plugin/109301 and our clients can upgrade if they like.
I was just wondering if others had used a calendar program for the multisite clients.

You can now find their free version plugin here: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/the-events-calendar/
Highly recommend it, we've also purchased the premium version for certain sites.
I have NOT fully tested in multisite but we do have it running on MS for 3-4 sites without problem

@Gina,
I need to have both Event + (for RSVP, Ticket) and a calendar (for non-RSVP, non-ticketing events) on a multi site setup.
What problem did you see when you tried to use them together?
Thanks!
