Thank you for this great question and a significant item to bring up.
I need a little more information please.
Are you having difficulty trying to do this?
Did this work in a previous WordPress version and not now?
What theme are you using?
I thought images from the media library could be mixed and matched as one sees fit and if it cannot be done in WordPress 3.4.1 I would be surprised.
Please advise.
