Hello,
I was mistook for a multi-site wordpress plugin (simple ad plugin) to be compatible with regular wordpress installation, and after installing it, I had to remove as it stopped my regular wordpress website from working. After doing rm -rf pluginname inside wp-content/plugins/, I keep seeing this notification from wpmudev.org:
Please install the latest version of our free Update Notifications plugin which helps you stay up-to-date with the most stable, secure versions of WPMU DEV themes and plugins. More information »
How do I remove that? Have rm -rf wp-content/plugins/pluginname actually removed the plugin or I have to dig into database? If I have to dig into database, what do I need to look for to completely remove the plugin for simple ad plugin?

I use wpmudev's plugins on other sites of mine that have compatible settings, it was a fluke to use on one of my websites that is not wordpress multi-site and buddypress. Therefore, I don't have any wpmudev's plugin that is installing on this site after I removed the simple ads plugin. In my opinion, when there is no plugin of wpmudev on a wordpress, there should not be such a notification message right? I don't want to have a feeling of something is broken if you know what I mean! Please advise. Thank you.
Oh, my bad! I've overlooked one thing, I have the popover plugin installed. No wonder the notification message is up. Do you think update notification plugin is compatible with regular wordpress? Last time I check, it has to be installed inside mu-plugins folder. Thanks...

Hiya argh2,
Update Notificaitons is compatible with single wordpress. It no longer needs to be installed in 'mu-plugins' but the mu-plugins folder isn't exclusive to multisite anyway. If it's a single-site install, you can manually create the mu-plugins directory as needed.

Hi argh2xxx!
Sorry the Simple Ad plugin didn't work out for you!
The message you are seeing is generated by our Update Notifications plugin. See http://premium.wpmudev.org/wpmu-dev/update-notifications-plugin-information/
We recommend you keep this as it will notify you of upgrades to plugins that you use, ensuring you get the most out of your membership!
I hope that's clear :)

If you are not using any WPMU DEV plugins on the site it makes sense for you to remove the update notifications plugin.
You should find that in /plugins/wpmudev-updates.
Simply de-activate, then remove the files from your installation.
