Is there a way to make a Wordpress 3.1 site and bbPress share membership logins so there is single sign-on for both. I need when someone is logged into their membership for them to be able to post in the forum without needing to register again or sign on again in the forum.

Have you given the bbpress plugin any thought? http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/bbpress/
bbpress is becoming a add-on to wordpress, the latest version (still in beta) makes use of wordpress's custom post types and template structure. It is much the same as buddypress in regards to plugging into wordpress.
bbpress, is almost ready and once out of beta and being a add-on, single sign on is no longer a issue.

@marcusc,
Yeah, I think buddypress are moving their bbpress code out, and are relying on the bbpress plugin as well. Makes sense as the lead developer of the bbpress plugin, is also a developer of the buddypress plugin.
Warning: it takes a little getting used to :(
But, once it gets loose into the wild, I'm sure great things are install for it, and (hoping) lots of documentation ;)
We'll just have to wait and see how everything falls into place.

Good move!
We're looking at extensions for bbPress as well when it finally moves out on it's own :)
