I just installed WP-Symposium. Great stuff! I started out with BuddyPress and BBPress, and had so many problems I killed it. WP-Symposium installed cleanly, and the settings were pretty much configured how I wanted them right out of the box.
It uses Wordpress pages and shortcodes, so you can add whatever sidebars you want, use custom layout, and anything else you can do with a WordPress page.
