Hiya!
New Blog Templates does not include a front-end template selector I'm afraid. However, you can set a default so that all new sites registered use a particular template.
I'm not sure if this is on the roadmap but it would be a very useful option.
Take for instance the blogs.mu template, where you have the service option. Being able to select the type of blog you want (i.e. normal blog, photo blog, wiki blog, marketpress, etc) during the signup process would really increase the potential of any multi-blog site.
There still are 2 remaining issues:
- The 'bp_after_blog_details_fields' action hook is not triggered inside the “hidable” set of blog signup fields so either you live with that (dropdown always displayed) or you customize the default BuddyPress theme.
- If you want to force using a template, you pass 'false' instead of 'true' to the 'get_template_dropdown' function, but, and for me it's a bug, the function doesn't deal with this parameter and still displays the 'none' option.

Hi asimetrick,
Many thanks for that one! That's been requested and while this snippet would only account for BuddyPress usage, it spans many of the use cases for this plugin.
Hopefully there's a similar action for regular WP Multisite blog creation. I'm going to see what I can find there. Thanks though, for a great snippet!
I'm never gonna let this thread die! It's too important to ignore...
either one of these would be huge for WPMUdev...
A. Blog types that mean something out of the box.
B. Choose Blog Template at signup
C. Select a theme at signup
a rare bold statement from me:
The impact of these suggestions add more value and marketability to a network than any single plugin that you guys are developing, right behind ProSites and Domain Mapping.
It's sad that not one of these requests seems to be on the priority list. consider this an impassioned plea with many supporting voices behind it! :-)
Hi guys, and thanks @pwpmd99999 for the tip about site creation wizard. I'll have a look at that.
I agree that there would be usefulness for levels integration of templates however I think the point here is to have the selection of templates or blog templates at the signup stage needs to be the first priority.
This is the featured most requested and this is what makes the setup appeal more to potential users of the networks that are built with ProSites in mind. People prefer being able to choose from some sort of layout or design when they signup.
Different templates available at different levels vs template selection at signup... anything that makes the signup process better is going to directly effect your sales. :-)
In the latest plugin release (v1.5, just released), there is a new option titled "Show templates selection on registration" on the plugin page. Checking this option will expose the templates chooser on the registration page and allow your users to select their template.
This is fantastic. You have really come through on this one. Thanks for listening WPMUdev I mean really... "I feel like my little wolf pack just grew by 1". :-)
It's done already @puregoldmarketing... The latest version allows selection of blog templates at registration and even has options to select by using the thumbnail of the active theme for that blog template.
If I create a several template blogs and allow them to be selected on registration, and set the default registration to level 1 - 7 day free trial, yet set up one of the templates based on a premium theme assigned to level 2
1. the level 1 & 2 templates are displayed (that is OK, and with the thumbnails is easy to brand 'premium')
2. if a user selects the 'premium' template
a) the site gets created using the premium template (as you might expect, but ideally it should come up with the 'has to be paid for' message)
b) the USER gets created - but is NOT assigned to any site, and then is totally impotent - can't select 'account' to upgrade even
Re my above post. I have spent quite a while testing this and my initial assumption on the cause of the issue is WRONG.
What causes 'impotent' users when selecting a template at registration is having the 'copy users' selected.
I guess this is 'obvious' as the creating user can not be in the 'template' so the template gets copied across and the created user is 'orphaned' - however there probably should be a health warning on that option (or maybe there is and I missed it !)

Is there any internal pass-along parameter that can be used for this? Something like http://domain.com/wp-signup.php?template=1 or similar.
PS: I know this post is marked as Resolved but it's the best one where to put this suggestion.

@embc Have you seen Blog Types?
It'll take a bit of custom tweaking but it'll go someway to providing what you need...

Hi all.
Not tested end to end, but adding this code in bp-cutom.php or any custom plugin or theme should achieve the goal:
There still are 2 remaining issues:

A template selector at registration would be great for us as our client base will vary from a simple setup to a more complex set of parameters.

Great is both of these could be brought forward.

Hi,
I can see a bug-let in the template on registration process, and this is because it is not linked to pro-sites (in my opinion) see also http://premium.wpmudev.org/forums/topic/pro-sites-and-new-blog-templates-1
If I create a several template blogs and allow them to be selected on registration, and set the default registration to level 1 - 7 day free trial, yet set up one of the templates based on a premium theme assigned to level 2
