Hiya Rob,
Are you testing this user on your site? This could just be a caching issue in that browser so perhaps try a different browser.
If that's not the case, then I would recommend logging into your database and checking your wp_users table to see if there is an entry there. If they are still listed then something stopped them from being removed.
In the end - with such a tight deadline, and stress levels through the roof... I abandoned wordpress, and went to CMS Made simple.... it's a package which I'm very familiar with.
The main reason for using wordpress was buddypress.... but as we've ditched buddypress...

Hey again Rob..
Looks like a fair bit has changed with CMS Made simple since the last time I looked. Sometimes what you know just works best. I have a client who prefers to stay with Joomla because they find WordPress complex to us. So yeah, it what you know sometimes.
Its just I've been using it since its first release... I've got some of the dev team on my skype, and when they're in the UK we sometimes go for beers - so I can hit them with any questions. I just find cms really easy to work with.. smarty tags... I can build extra fields / custom types in without the need to write functions... its a straight ahead brochure cms. It doesn't have as many plugins, but I find it really easy to build what I need using a combination of what it provides.
Joomla?? hehe..... I'll leave him with that one.
I've not left wordpress though - the experience has been most useful, and I now feel competant to take on some wordpress projects :)

Well if your offering drinks then I live in Yorkshire!!! lol
I do like SMARTY, the CMSs which I came from originally both use SMARTY for themes and templates. I always rather enjoyed it. I do love WordPress but I stuck with those other projects for so long because they worked for me and were easy.
Joomla?? hehe..... I'll leave him with that one.
Same here!!
I do mainly use WP now though it was just more practical for me in end. :-)

Hi Tom and Mason,

We were able to go live, and it's paying off :)
