I am looking for a plugin that will automatically resize user's image uploads. Any suggestions?

I've only seen hacks before:

I had suggested way back when passing it through the built in thumbnail filter, just at a large size.
The problem is though anything over a meg, wordpress doesn't want to make a thumbnail for as it;s considered a strain on the server.
I really feel that this is an educational issue. Having endusers discover that you;re modifying their content without them being told about it and/or without their permission is just going to piss them off. If they want to upload multiple meg files and run out of space, it's up to them.

Education is the primary issue, but even for the small % of people who understand this, it is too much hassle to resize using some third party software first. I wonder if there is a firefox extension that does this?
Edit: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11005/
Still to me the best option would be to mod the flash uploader to resize before upload, and of course have a little checkbox to disable that for power users.

Maybe better (I think works with flash uploader): http://www.techspikes.com/2010/01/automatically-shrink-upload-photos/
