Not my idea :) A couple of people requested it in the survey... we have a few more cool new ones coming soon along those lines too as well as updated membership, marketpress and (eventually) supporter stuff!
Could this be used with multisite? We are trying to figure a way to use one Zendesk with multiple multisite installs. Zendesk's remote login makes it possible for users to log into Zendesk automatically with their WP credentials. However, each Zendesk only works this way with one WordPress installation (which can be multisite). If we could sync the users from the other networks to our "master" one, that would enable Zendesk single signon for everyone.
Is this a two-way sync i.e. from subsites back to the master site, and then replicated back to other subsites?
Or, just a one-way sync from the master site out to the subsite/s?
If it's just a one-way sync (from master to subsites only) would there be a way to put a registration form, perhaps via a widget, on the subsites that the users are actually on, that would write back to the master site for replication out to the other subsites?
Theoretically speaking, could this tool be deployed to "sub-sites" using Plugin Manager?
Just so that a sub-site could be a master for another sub-site?
I don't know if that makes sense or not... I'm thinking universal login for multiple accounts.
Is there anything we should know about integrating this plugin with Wordpress Membership? Will that work harmoniously? There may be an obvious answer to this, but I have yet to experiment with either, so I couldn't say for sure.
Hypothetically, I am running multiple singular Wordpress sites on a single domain - each site in a different directory. If I were to use this plugin to sync user accounts across those sites, would it be possible that if a user is logged-in to one, they are logged into all?
So, for example, if they are logged in on...
example.com/SiteA
... are they also logged in on ...
example.com/SiteB
?
I'm thinking probably not, but is there an easy way to make that happen?
I don't think so, because the cookies would be different - so they'd need to use the same login details on each account - but youi could make the cookies last for much logger by extending the wordpress log in log out cookie like this.
I keep getting an error when attempting to connect the subsite to the main:
There was a connection problem. Please check the URL and Key of the Master site.
I have double checked and I am entering the right information.
Also I am also interested in a question asked earlier - is this sync two ways or does it just sync from main site to subs.
If the sync is currently only one-way, are there any plans to make it both ways?
If you have say five websites and you wanted to use this plugin to synch user details across all five. I appreciate that one of the five websites would arbitrarily be made the master, lets call it site1. But from a practical standpoint, how would users wanting to register on sites-2, -3, -4 and -5 sync their details so they could log on at any one of the 5 sites?
Would it be best to use an iframe on sites -2, -3, -4 and -5 to embed the registration form from the master site1? Or how do you suggest doing it? Sending users off to another site to register and then expecting them to come back to the original site isn't really feasible, or user considerate. Hence my previous post regarding widgets for this purpose
Would it be better to have the master site devoid of any content and just purely to manage and synch users?
I'm just trying to work out how this could actually work in a real world scenario
@univiz
ok, lets imagin a situation: you have 20-30 sites and you need a developer (temporary) to perform certain tasks at each site.
You may give him 20-30 admins login and password information for these sites.
Or you may create manualy on 20-30 sites new admins (if you don't want give him current admins information).
Or you may create one admin user on the Master site and Sync him on all 20-30 sites and then give developer one login and password. When developer finished work, you must only delete this user from master site and he will be deleted from 20-30 subsites automatically.
Thanks for your upate but as per original post I'm looking at this from an end-users perspective and how it might be deployed for the end users benefit.
If you have say five (loosely) related sites, then it could make a good cross-sell, if users were automatically registered on the sister sites and, as per the original post, how could this be done e.g via an iframe ??
Thanks for the suggestion but the sites are all entirely separate domains (for SEO and niche marketing purposes) but nevertheless are loosely related. To be able to sync users, or more specifically to have a registration on one site populate throughout the other sites would have been good. Thought it was too good to be true. But thank you anyway for your feedback and suggestions
I have the same problem as univiz. My problem is that the multi-domain plugin was not avaliable when I made my installs. I have 3 separate installs for the only reason that they are on different domains. I would like to sync the 3 and use the multi-domain plugin as well.
I'm creating a network of sites for different towns/cities in England. This plugin would be great as users would only need to sign up once, and they would then be a member on all the sites.
What I see users having a problem with though, is going to our main site to sign up and then returning to the site they were originally on.
I think that having a widget would solve the problem, as this could easily be placed on each of the sub sites. This way, all the info could be added to the master site, without the need to go anywhere else.
Yes, I looked at the Domain Mapping plugin but don't see how that would achieve what I (and @wp3 and @qlof to a lesser extent) want to do. All sites (single WP+BP) are by design on totally separate domains and I want to keep them that way for niche / marketing purposes.
But, as explained previously, it would be good if users could also be automatically registered on separate but related sites. Your blurb about this plugin states
" If you have multiple WordPress single sites up and running, you can now seamlessly share the same users, login information, permissions, and more. Works great with BuddyPress sites too
So, to achieve this (and I asked this in a previous post), if the logon form from the master site was embedded via say an iFrame into the sub-sites, would this work? Obviously a widget on the sub-sites would be much better. If the iFrame method would work, I could set up WP on a separate domain to act as the master. Have it completely devoid of any content apart from explaining registration etc. and then embed the registration form via iFrames on the sub-sites. Or is there a better way to achieve this? Or, will there be a widget to do this soon?
@WP3 - Your sceanario is not unsimilar to mine. We are both trying to achieve the same end user benefit and we both appreciate that users, if they have to troll off to another site to register, will probably not bother to return to the original site - similar to 'shopping cart abandonment' but this would be registration abandonment.
Seeing as how you're the multisite experts, is a multisite-compatible version of this plugin in the works? We have a need to synchronize users from various WP networks to the main network to enable single signon for Zendesk.
I keep getting an error when attempting to connect the subsite to the main:
There was a connection problem. Please check the URL and Key of the Master site.
I have double checked and I am entering the right information.
Plugin is great, but is there a way for it to sync the membership type too? I want to sync admins to the sub sites but they all show up as subscribers....
I want to add my name to the discussion led here by @univiz. I appreciate the plugin as is (though it actually fails to work for me at all), but if it is to be really what it says it is, you must have two-way syncing, or else the possibility of adding widget on sub-sites that would invoke the registration and login of the master-site.
Real world application is about end users, not assisting one-off developers access.
Sync 2 ways and multisite is my suggestion. Imagen to have 10 multisites and users only need to sign up to one and they are registered members of all 10 multisites.
Why did you stay short and did it for single site and one way?
You could also have options to select 2 way and multisite/single-site if you want.

Hello
This is a good new product. Question : this is not for use with multisites installation ?

Correct, this isn't for Multisite - single use WP / BP only.

I think in this case it would be better to look in WordPress Multisite:

"By design, all users who are added to your network will have subscriber access to all sites on your network."
