BuddyPress 1.5 Beta is Here – Start Your Engines!

Breaking News: BuddyPress 1.5 Beta is here… Yes, you read that correctly! We’re jumping ahead to version 1.5!

The BuddyPress development team has shipped 9 point releases since 1.2 was released in February of 2010, so the latest version will leap frog the version number from 1.2.9 up to 1.5. A developer beta 1 has been sent out into the wild for testing.

Take a look at how far BuddyPress has come since 1.2 was released:

  • 792 tickets closed
  • 494 confirmed bug fixes
  • 2,161 total code changes since 1.2 was released

The purpose of the developer beta is so that plugin authors can get their code in order and report any bugs. If you’ve written a plugin for BuddyPress, now is the time to get it ready for this next major release.

We’re really excited about BuddyPress 1.5, as core developer John James Jacoby reports that it is “faster, more efficient, more secure, and easier to code against.”

Another exciting thing about this update is that it includes a much-improved default theme – one that you may actually want to use! BuddyPress theme developers should have a good sniff around this new theme.

Please note that this is a beta for testing only – do not put it on a live production site. The plan is that the beta period will only last a few weeks, with a release to come in August.
