A little while ago, I had promised to talk a bit more about the Donation, Store, and Events tools (more below) that WePay offers to help you collect money from your users/customers. Since then, WePay has added a new element to their services (more below), but the basic stuff is still in place and, in this post and the next one, I will be letting you know about what those tools are and how they can work with your site. The WePay Store tool (more below) makes running an online store about as easy as humanely possible. It is designed to let you display your products, collect payments, and manage inventory in a matter of minutes. The store you create is actually housed on WePay.com’s site (and the payments are processed there) and, if you want to really make things easy on yourself, you can direct all customers to that site and not worry about integrating it with your site. Through the use of their widgets and payment buttons (really just iframes), though, you can also install buttons and a widget on your site that make it appear as if the whole purchasing process, from display to payment processing, is happening entirely on your site.
To launch your online store, i.e. creating and embedding it, you have to first sign up for the WePay service. That can be done with just an email address and a phone number or by connecting with your Facebook account. To create/configure the store, you do the following:
- Name the store, describe it, and add a logo.
- Add items to the store (name, description, image(s), price, and options)
- Enter the shipping rules, determine the handling fee, and enter appropriate sales tax rules.
- Publish your store with a click. It gives you a URL for the store (https://www.wepay.com/stores/xxxxxx), but you can customize it.
- Share on Facebook and Twitter or email your contacts.
- Enable or disable Facebook comments on your store. The store page also features share buttons for Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter as well as an email contact form.
If you want to customize the look of the store, you can do so, but they will charge you a 6% transaction fee as opposed to their standard 3.5% fee. Considering that they don’t let you add any images or headers, but really just adjust the colors, it is really not worth the increased fees.
Put It On Facebook
This is probably the coolest of the features that WePay offers: you can sell products directly from your Facebook page. You have to create a page first, but it can be easily enabled if you already have a page for your website or company. Just connect with your Facebook account and it will automatically install the WePay Store on your Facebook page. The Store allows your users to complete the entire purchasing process, from viewing the products to sharing them with friends to buying them, from inside your Facebook page! - In addition to those three, WePay actually also offers a fourth tool, Invoicing, which is very good, but really doesn’t integrate with your website and is pretty self explanatory. A great Youtube video here will give a summary of what it can do and how it does it.
- WePay has made it a lot easier to take payments on your site. Yay! Rather than using an iframe or redirect, you can now also create your own payment forms and use WePay as the processor. To learn more about how to do that, it is an API function and will require some technical know how on your part, check out this tutorial.
- If you want a solution that allows you a lot more in the way of customization and control, MarketPress is probably a better bet. WePay is really designed for people who don’t want to spend much time configuring and creating a shopping page.
