Quiz: Should You Use WordPress.org or WordPress.com?
If you’ve taken the time to read our article WordPress.com and WordPress.org: What’s the Difference? then you know there are major differences between the two WordPress platforms. While both the hosted and self-hosted versions of WordPress are technically free to use (at least to start), that is pretty much where the similarities end.
The major difference between WordPress.com and WordPress.org is how your website is actually hosted. With WordPress.org, you host your own website. You can download the free WordPress software from WordPress.org and install it on your own web server. WordPress.com, on the other hand, looks after the hosting for you. You don’t need to download the software or pay for hosting, it’s all included with your WordPress.com account.

WordPress.com is the perfect platform for bloggers, small business owners, freelancers, and anyone who isn’t all that technically savvy.
It’s a good choice for anyone:
- Who doesn’t mind that their website advertises that it’s hosted by WordPress.
- Who doesn’t need or want extensive control over how their site looks or what it can do.
- Who is really tight on cash and can’t currently spring for costs related to hosting, domain, premium themes, plugins, and more (at least for right now).
If you want a quick and dirty way to get a blog or website up for the world to see, this is the choice for you. And if you’re just starting a website for the first time and don’t intend on turning it into a major global corporation within the next year or so, this is a low commitment way to test the waters.
WordPress.org is the perfect platform for technically savvy users who want full control over the website creation process, from start to finish.
It’s a good choice for:
- Web design professionals who need a reliable and comprehensive website building tool (web designers, developers, implementers, etc.)
- Business owners, marketers, bloggers, and other non-web design professionals who are comfortable working in cloud-based software.
If you want more choices, flexibility, and power over how your website is made, this is the choice for you. And while it would be beneficial to know how to code (at least HTML), it’s not necessary as there are a number of third-party integrations that can do the work for you.
For some of you, the answer you got from this quiz might not be what you expected, and that’s okay. WordPress is a fantastic platform to work with whether you’re a novice user or an expert coder. It also happens to be the perfect tool to have on your side as you scale your business or grow your skills as an implementer or developer. Whether you end up with .org or .com to start, you’ve made a smart choice.
