Twenty Twelve: The New WordPress Default Theme Coming Soon to WordPress.org

Today marks the introduction of the new Twenty Twelve theme on WordPress.com. Very soon the theme will be available for free in the WordPress Theme Directory and will be rolled into the WordPress 3.5 download package.

A couple months ago we gave you a sneak peek of Twenty Twelve theme and now it’s out in the wild. You’ll probably start to see this theme popping up on many sites around the web.

This theme was designed to be suitable for both blogs and websites, without leaning heavily on either side. It’s fully responsive and was designed as a mobile-first layout so that it will look great on all devices.

Twenty Twelve features:

  • Homepage Template – the homepage can be easily customized with its own template, homepage-only widgets and content areas.
  • Post Formats – A consistent style for post formats throughout the theme in list and single views. Styles are included for links, quotes, asides and images.
  • Beautiful Modern Typography – Twenty Twenlve makes use of the Open Sans typeface for a clean, readable display.

We will make sure to let you know when Twenty Twelve hits the WordPress Theme Directory, so make sure you’re following @wpmuorg on Twitter.

In the meantime, you can test drive the theme by activating it on a WordPress.com blog or by checking out the live demo. View the official Twenty Twelve homepage at WordPress.com for further details.

Coming up with a theme that could stand up to Twenty Ten and Twenty Eleven was a tall order. In the tradition of previous default themes, Twenty Twelve surpasses all its predecessors and beautifully showcases the capabilities of WordPress for both blogging and content management.
