Add a WordPress Page Excerpt to Your Write/Edit Screen
Out of the box, WordPress gives you the ability to manually create excerpts for your Posts by entering text into an Excerpt box just below the main editing screen on the Write/Edit page.
But what if you want to excerpts for Pages too?
That’s easily done. You can just put this one little line of code in your functions.php file. (Appearance > Editor > Theme Functions – functions.php)
add_post_type_support( 'page', 'excerpt' );
And here you can see the Excerpt box showing up for Pages.
How to Show the Excerpt
These excepts will show wherever the the_excerpt is used for Pages. For example, as we went over in a post about showing Pages in the stream on your homepage, you could show your handcrafted excerpts there (as long as the page is set up to show excerpts).
Here’s a look at a Page with the full content streaming on the homepage.
And now here’s a look at that same homepage with the manual excerpt showing up instead.
Plugins to Create Excerpts for Pages
If you would like to make your own simple plugin for this code above, you can learn how to do that here. (A plugin is handy because it’s independent of your theme.)
And there are also ready-made plugins that will create a manual excerpt box for you. The Page Excerpt plugin is one that I’ve tested and that works.
