A couple of problems after installing SSL

Hello!

I am very new to SSL and just installed it for the first time for one of my sites. A couple of things:

1. I noticed that my PageSpeed and GT Metrix score went down a little bit. Is this normal?

2. The lock icon in the browser is gray for me when for other people's SSL site, it is green. When you click on the lock icon in the browser, you get this message: "Your connection to shiftwebsolutions.com is encrypted with modern cryptography. However, this page includes other resources which are not secure. These resources can be viewed by others while in transit, and can be modified by an attacker to change the look of the page." What do I need to do to fix this?

3. I can't remember where I read it, but awhile back I think I read somewhere that there are some steps I need to take after installing SSL. My site has been around for about 5 years and I have a lot of backlinks from other sites. Nothing is going to be effected and my old links with "http" instead of "https" still work, correct? Are there important steps or advice I need to take after installing SSL? Your suggestions are appreciated!

In case you need it, the site in question is shiftwebsolutions.com.

Thank you!

    Hello sinoun,

    1. I noticed that my PageSpeed and GT Metrix score went down a little bit. Is this normal?

Yes, adding SSL could slow down your site a little bit. When you use SSL, you are adding another 2 steps to the process of how a browser and web server communicate. The sender has to work to encrypt the data before transmitting it, and the receiver has to decrypt the data before it can process it. So - it takes a bit more time than without SSL.

You have to check if all resources on your site are using "https" in their url. Images, styles, scripts, other files. Using files with "http" and "https" will give you mixed content warnings.
Some times the best option is to remove "http:" from the url, to look like this "//my-website-url.com/path-to-my-logo/logo.png" - in this way it will work, and browser will set this as "https" url by itself.

Nothing is going to be effected and my old links with "http" instead of "https" still work, correct? Are there important steps or advice I need to take after installing SSL?

Have you tried to open you site with old "http:" url? If this redirected to your site with SSL everything is fine, if not - there you should take more steps: at the bottom of this article is how to proceed http://designmodo.com/wordpress-https/ - the "What’s Next?" chapter. There is code that will redirect old url's to new ones.

please let me know if this is helpful

    Kind regards,
