Adding domain to Multisite

Hi, I have tried following all blogs and guides on your site to be able to set up a different domain on my main one. But so far I have had no success. Can you please help?

    Hello Derek,

I'm not sure if I understood you correctly - do you want to map another domain to your main site in network or move your network to another domain? I'm asking because "set up a different domain on my main one" is not clear for me.

If first - that cannot be done, even with Domain Mapping plugin - only subsite can have mapped domains.
If you want to move to another domain here is tutorial https://premium.wpmudev.org/blog/move-multisite-new-domain/ - have you tried this one? If yes and it's not working can you tell me on what step it stopped working?

I realize that I might not understood your question and you are asking how to map domain to subsite - in this case I would like to know if you are using our Domain Mapping plugin and what steps from usage page you followed to add domain - so I can see how it looks like now and what could be possible issue here.
    More details is better.

    kind regards,
    Kasia

    Hi Kasia,

Yes I would like to "map another domain to your main site in network" as you put it

    So i'm clear.
http://www.example.com is main site with multisite installed with WPMU domain mapping plugin installed
    I would like
http://www.examplesite2.com mapped on http://www.example.com and be able to add other domains too.

I have followed instructions to use domain mapping tool. But when I try to add new site. It only gives the option to create a sub domain of my main site http://www.example.com

I can give support access if that helps.

    Thank you.

    Hi Derek,

I would like "http://www.examplesite2.com" mapped on "http://www.example.com" and be able to add other domains too.

As Kasia said above, I'm afraid, you can not map your network main site with any other domain. So "www.example.com" can not be mapped with "www.examplesite2.com". But subsites of your network, e.g. , "subsite.example.com" can be mapped with "www.examplesite2.com" or any other subdomain.

I have followed instructions to use domain mapping tool. But when I try to add new site. It only gives the option to create a sub domain of my main site http://www.example.com

I'm not exactly sure about what you actually meant with this line. Can you please describe the step by step process you are following so we can regenerate this issue on your site or our sites? We can guide you better if we are clear about your process. Please send us as much details as possible. And also please grant us Support Access so we can see the issue live on your site.

Please let us know if you have any confusion. We will be glad to help.

    Have a nice day. Cheers!

    Hi Derek,

Hope you are doing good today.

When I add a new site I want it to have its own domain. That is possible with domain mapping right? I have granted access to the site. Thanks

I checked your website, and it seems like you don't have any subsites created at the moment. As mentioned above, you cannot map your main site, you can only map your subsites. When you add a new site under Sites > Add New, a subsite gets created.

Domain mapping plugin, doesn't automatically assign a new domain, when you create a new subsite. In your newly created subsite dashboard, you'll have to go to Tools > Domain Mapping, and enter your domain to be mapped manually.

You can check the product usage section for more info:
    https://premium.wpmudev.org/project/domain-mapping/#product-usage

I hope this helps. Please let us know if you still need any further assistance. Have a nice day.

    Kind Regards,
    Nithin

    Thanks Nithin,

I now see where I was going wrong. I followed your instructions, I can now map my subsite.

However I have a problem. The domain is not available. I have directed A record to the IP. Can you see anything that may be causing the problem?

    Thanks

    Hi Derek,

I investigated the issue on your site and it seems like you are using cPanel and your server IP address is not opening your network main site. So you will need to add that domain which you are trying to map in your cPanel as Addon domain and set the path for that domain to your main site root directory. This will solve your issue I believe.

If you have any confusion, or if you think this will be too complex for you, can you send me a message with cPanel access credentials through our secure contact form here: https://premium.wpmudev.org/contact/ so we can try to fix this for you?

    Subject: "Attn: Rupok"
    - cPanel Username
    - cPanel Password
    - cPanel Login URL
    - Domain you are trying to map
    - Link back to this thread for reference
    - Any other relevant URLs

Select "I have a different question" for your topic. This and the subject line ensure that it gets assigned to me.

I'm looking forward to hearing from you and resolve this issue as soon as possible.

    Have a nice day. Cheers!

    Hi Derek,

Thanks for sending details but I'm afraid, the credentials you sent for cPanel is not working. I mean I can't login to cPanel with the credentials you provided.

Can you please check again and provide us working credentials so we can work on this and resolve this issue as soon as possible?

    Have a nice day. Cheers!

    Hi Derek,

Thanks for sending the working credentials. I logged in and found that you have added that domain in your Addon Domain section successfully, but you didn't change the path pointing to the root directory of your main site. I changed that inside cPanel.

Then I went to the subsite Dashboard > Tools > Domain Mapping section and mapped your domain. Please check the attached screenshot for reference.

Now if you go to your mapped domain, that particular subsite will load. Can you please check and confirm?

    Have a nice day. Cheers!

    Hello again.

My main domain seems to have a problem after mapping the new domain. I cannot view any pages on the site other than the home page. They are just white screens. Do you have any ideas how I can fix this?

    Thanks

Also all images are broken. I have removed the subsite for now. That did not help. I then removed some plugins. That did solve the page loading issue. Still at a loss with images. If you can help at your earliest that would be great.

    Hi Derek,

This is very weird and subsite mapping should not have any relation with main site image loading.

However, I could tell you better about the issue if I could see it live, check your current configuration and make some tests on your site. Would you mind allowing Support Access so we can have a closer look at this?

To enable support access you can follow this guide here:
    http://premium.wpmudev.org/manuals/wpmu-dev-dashboard-enabling-staff-login/

Please confirm here when you are done granting Support Access. I'm looking forward to hearing from you and resolve this issue as soon as possible.

    Have a nice day. Cheers!
